For the last 26 years, starting the day after Thanksgiving, local classic rock radio station WIMZ teams up with Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, for Camping for Cans. Radio personality Billy Kidd is camping, with a huge trailer, in front of Knoxville Wholesale Furniture on Kingston Pike, erasing hunger one can at a time.
Second Harvest serves 18 counties in east Tennessee, and shares some horrifying stats:
- 1 in 5 east Tennesseans will go hungry tonight;
- 40% of those are children;
- The working poor are the largest portion of people that seek assistance;
- There are more people seeking food than food coming in
Interestingly, Knox County has the largest number of at risk for hunger at 60,730 people, and yet, the lowest poverty rate of the 18 counties Second Harvest serves.
Stop by the trailer in front of Knoxville Wholesale Furniture, and say "Hi" to Billy Kidd. If you have forgotten to pick up some cans to add to the huge trailer, a $20 donation (that will feed a family of 4 for a week!) will get you a 2011 WIMZ Camping for Cans Limited Edition T-shirt.
We can all help by erasing hunger one can at a time.
