"Frederick Hayek made the point that one of the keystones of socialism is the denial of individual responsibility.  Thus, the crusade for socialism always included attacks on individual responsibility.  For if individuals do not have free will, and are not responsible for their actions, then their lives must be controlled somehow - preferably by the state - according to the socialists.  They must be regulated, regimented and controlled - for their own good."

Thomas J. DiLorenzo

One of the surest signs that a society has moved toward socialism, is the measurement of how much individual responsibility has been controlled.

AND HOW OFTEN INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY IS REVILED BY THAT SOCIETY'S "LEADERS"!

Two of the influences of Dr. DiLorenzo's economic thinking was Frederick Hayek and John T. Flynn.  I will write a future post about Mr. Flynn.

Hayek wrote two influential books.  The first, The Road To Serfdom, written between 1940 and 1943, looked at why the socialism in the world, which became communism, would fail.  He listed many reasons.  Then in 1988 he wrote the follow-up book, The Fatal Conceit, The Errors of Socialism, which showed why it had failed, WITH DATA.  He proved why he was right with his first book.

John T. Flynn wrote an interesting book in 1949 called The Road Ahead; America's Creeping Revolution.  In it he lists what things to look for as a society moves toward socialism.  One of the last nails in the coffin, he wrote, is the establishment of what he called "national health care."

Each of these books talk about individual responsibility and how it becomes stripped by the statists.  Each talks about how free will is little by little denied by the statists.  Each talks about how individual lives must be controlled by the statists.

Notice how much individual responsibility is removed, freedom is denied and control, absolute control, is initiated by the recent "health" care legislation?  Is Flynn right?

OF COURSE HE IS!

Dr. DiLorenzo, an economics professor at Loyola University in Maryland is an adherent to the Austrian School of economics and a crusader against the creeping socialism that is so prevalent today, and warned about for lo these many years.

Why is the very evident so pretended not to exist by the statists?  Easy!  Control...

Good morning, Jay. Sadly, the elitists on the Hill and making sure that the gap between the "Haves" and "Have Not's" widens. By creating a "Nanny State" were folks live on the doles that trickle down and out of DC, they guarantee themselves more terms in the lap of luxury...

Hey Jay, Interesting post. I went to ebay and Amazon to see if I could find a copy of Road to Serfdom, very expensive. A first printing HC/DJ cost more that $14,000. There were some other editions, I'll have to do some research and find a copy to purchase. Thanks for the education.

Have an AWESOME day!

The voters will simply have to change that Michael.  Or we all perish.

Michael B. - Very expensive?  There are many sites to buy it.  My copy is paperback, but dated 1988.  Try here:

Well said, Jay.  The sad fact is the masses have no idea what's happening in the country.  Shoot, the average voting college student doesn't even know who the vice president is.  All the more reason for those who are informed to be engaged.

Michael, I picked up my copy of the Road to Serfdom on Amazon for less than $20 bucks.  Good book choices, Jay.  There is a set of viral videos floating around YouTube that explain the battle between Keynes and Hayek.  If you haven't seen them, they are acted out to music by two fellows who do a great job.  They are definitely worth a few minutes of time.

We had to read that book in college Mike.  I did not get my own copy until the late 80s, but I have one!

Thanks Jay and Mike! I have both of Hayeks books in my shopping cart for Amazon, as soon as I can find a couple more book I'll buy them, I like that free shipping!

I'm looking for a good book on Andrew Jackson, especially one that explains his fight with the bankers. Any suggestions?

Jay, we won't find out how close we are to a smaller system until the Supreme Court decides soon if the forced Health Care is actually constitutional or not.

Like they need to decide what we must ( buy) pay for or not.

Enjoy the day sir

Michael - look up a book by Milton Friedman, Money Mischief - Episodes in Monetary History - he treats the Jackson/Biddle thing very well.

Don - if it is constitutional to force me to buy a particular insurance, it is constitutional to force me to buy Twinkies.  Or anything.

Jay - Not much to add. The country is on the wrong track and neither politicians nor the majority of voters seem interested in changing directions.

(BTW, I'm forced to buy Twinkies regularly)

Jay -- once again you have succinctly set out one of the major issues of our time.  BTW - the link you provided for finding the book -- every source is overseas (hmmmmmmmm).

John - I have not had a Twinkie in a long time!  Maybe it's time to force me...

Steven - sorry!  Didn't notice that.  Try Amazon - I saw it as low as $11.56.

It's hard to convince someone that it is necessary for them to take some responsibility in life when their gov't is telling them that they don't.  Good job Jay.

Not only that Jack, but giving them the means by which they don't need to take responsibility.  The taxpayer becomes the sugar daddy.

Nice post Sir Jay.  It is so obvious I don't understand why people can't see it.  I guess it is like the old say about the trees and forest.

I think they see it James.  Maybe the rabble doesn't, but those controllers of that there rabble see it clearly.  And people like me, pointing these things out, are just in the way.

Jay,

So true that controlling individual liberties is the hallmark of socialism. It's how the state elevates its authority. :)

That is its only chance Steve!  You can't force people to stand in line all day for a roll of toilet paper without total control!
