Recycle your Christmas Tree - Montgomery County, MD
:

If you have enjoyed a real Christmas-tree this season like we have, you are now inevitably faced with the question of how or where to recycle your Christmas tree in Montgomery County, MD.

The easiest way would be to place it out by the curb on your regular recycling pick-up day. The Montgomery County yard trim recycling crews will be picking them up until February 3, 2012. If you somehow manage to enjoy your tree for much longer than that, you can still chop it into pieces and recycle it with your regular yard trim collection after February 3rd.

In case you miss the recycling pick-up and don't want to wait another week, you can also drop it off at the Shady Grove Processing Facility & Transfer Station in Derwood.

You could also consider stripping it of its branches and needles and using those around your trees and bushes over the winter & and recycle the rest with your yard trim. Alternately, if you have a compost, branches and needles can be added to the pile which in turn can help your lawn, be used as mulch or mixed into the soil of your vegetable garden.

... chipping, mulching, composting or collection on your regular recycling day are all good options or planting it in you yard if you bought one with a root-ball - just never burn a Christmas tree in your fireplace!

Whichever
way you choose to recycle your Christmas tree please make sure its been stripped of all ornaments, lights and tinsels. They'll not be collected by the Montgomery County Recycling crews or accepted at the Shady Grove Processing Facility with decorations still attached.

Our tree is still looking pretty and has lost only a few needles (thank you Triadelphia Lake Farm!). We are not ready to recycle it just yet .. but in a few days I'll be shaking off the needles and cutting off some branches to use around the yard and the rest will be placed out by the curb for collection. My girls will be sad .. but we'll have next season to look forward to.

The City of Winchester is using the trees they collect this year for next springs mulch.  So, it's a win win for everyone.  Have a great New Years, Andrea!

Hi Jane: Yea, I don't think we'll be holding on to ours until the beginning of February but just a little while longer, it still looks great!
