Most of us have iniquitous behaviors we’d like to stop: overeating, smoking, being sedentary, drinking too much, swearing, but if stopping was easy everyone would do it. However, change is possible if you really want it and are willing to work for it.

13 years ago I indulged in many bad habits that were systematically destroying my life. Not just my exterior, but my spirit was crushed under a barrage of bad behaviors that ran my life.

Pain was the touchstone to changing my life and becoming the person I wanted to be. I knew I wasn’t fulfilling God’s plan drinking, over eating, and blaming the world for my problems. I had to take responsibility for where my life was at. I was an alcoholic, in a destructive marriage with no college degree and 40 pounds overweight.

My journey to wellbeing began the night I faced my biggest problem – I was an alcoholic. December 12, 1998 I hit rock bottom. I was a daily drinker consuming several bottles of wine and mixing it with Xanax – a leather combination, and I was physically addicted to both.

That night I made the choice I was done – I wasn't living the life God intended, not by a long shot. I entered into a 5 day detox and went to A.A. where I began to live the 12 steps of recovery. I didn’t stop there.

If I were going to stay sober I had to continue to change. I joined a gym, started working-out and eating right. I lost 40 lbs, but not over night and have kept it off for 13 years.

4 years into my recovery, I got out of a destructive marriage and went back to school at night. It took 5 years to get my degree, but I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. I’m no genius and had to work really hard, but I broke it down to one day at a time so I didn’t overwhelm myself.  

They say in A.A. you have to give it away to keep it so I began to sponsor other women who were struggling with alcoholism. I also began to volunteer at my local animal shelter and send monthly donations to charities I was passionate about. Someone very wise told me if you want to feel good, do good things………and it works.

Every January I evaluate where I’m at and set new goals: Physical, spiritual, educational and business. I write down my goals, fold them up and put it in my God box. It’s my way of giving the outcome to God, but having a plan.

Then I take action and wrtie a detailed plan of how I’m going to achieve each goal. I don’t make excuses, or have contingencies because something will always get in the way, if you let it.

None of these changes occurred overnight and some took years, but it was worth the work and in doing so, I was building character, self-esteem and integrity – I answered to a higher authority, God.  Isn't it time you started living the life you've only dreamed about?!
