In the past, San Antonio has had little in the way of healthy eating and shopping. I suppose with the heavy influence of German and Mexican cuisine it seems that there isn't much room for that - pi shah!
The Quarry Market is one of our luxury shopping centers and being smack dab in the middle of San Antonio makes it a great location for everyone. This is one spot that Trader Joe's is considering according to MySanAntonio.com. Regardless of an existing HEB Food & Drug and a Whole Foods Market, it's on the radar.
The other areas that could be good for Trader Joe's is the far Northwest side. The Rim & LaCantera are our newest luxury shopping areas sporting the highest volume of secondary education and highest incomes in the area. It is also a stage coach if you will for those traveling to the Fredericksburg, Kerrville, or the Texas Hill Country. For hundreds of miles past that point all you have are IGAs and Super S markets.
Is San Antonio ready for more healthy eating? I think so. Sprouts recently sneaked into our grocery market. HEB, our primary and home grown grocery chain, and even Wal-Mart have added more considerably healthier foods. As one who recently went organic and gluten free this makes me very happy, and I can attest to the increased aisle space found in those specialty areas - now becoming not so specialty.
Mayor Castro has made it his policy to keep us off the fat list. For a decade we ping-ponged with Houston for the infamous "Fattest City in America" award! Mr. Castro put incentives in place in our municipal offices in 2010 for employees to eat healthier and exercise more. I've noticed more and more little organic restaurants popping up downtown and around town too. I love Mexican food, I think most people do, but I think I like being healthy more.
Let's see what happens next!
