You've paid tolls to drive on roads up and down the East Coast but never in our state. Until now.
It's official. The Triangle Expressway runs from Durham County into Wake County. The 3.5 mile section that's open now connects the Highway 147 and I-40 interchange to Highway 540 near Research Triangle Park. And as of January 3rd the NC DMV is open for business and charging passengers.
There is a fee for the transponder. NC Quick Pass offers three types of transponders, with prices shown below.
Sticker Transponder | $ 5 |
Hardcase Transponder | $20 |
Exterior Transponder |
$25 |
The fees are much higher without a NC Quick Pass so it is a good idea to get one today!
How much does the Toll Road Cost?
NC Quick Pass toll rates vary by toll plaza, vehicle class, and whether an NC Quick Pass transponder or Bill By Mail (video tolling by license plate recognition) is used. The most frequently needed information is below.
2 axles | $0.50 | $0.77 | NC 540 SB to NC147 NB |
3 axles | $1.00 | $1.54 | NC 540 SB to NC147 NB |
4+ axles | $2.00 | $3.08 | NC 540 SB to NC147 NB |
The rest of the Tollway will run from HWY 55 to Hwy 1 in Holly Springs and will be open by December 2012. I'm very excited about the new road and what it promises for Southern Wake County! Here's a big thank you to the DMV even if we have to pay a toll to use the road!
