Homeonwers can never be too careful about fire prevention.  Here are seven fire safety tips that both new and experienced homeowners alike should review.  Thanks to Connie Harvey of Nashville TN for these tips!

 Seven Fire Safety Tips

Recently, several home fires have made the National News. There are fFire Safetyew things more tragic than homes and lives destroyed by fire. Unfortunately, many of the conditions that cause house fires can be prevented or avoided by the homeowners.

Taking a few precautions can save lives and your possessions.

1. Wood burning fireplaces should be professionally cleaned and inspected each year. The build up of Creosote can be very dangerous and can cause a flash fire in the chimney.

2. Check all the cords and plugs on electrical appliances and equipment for fraying or exposed wires.

3. Space heaters should not be left unattended. They should be place away from curtains, bedding, papers or anything flammable.

Fire Safety4. 60% of the fatalities from home fires occur in homes with either no smoke detectors or non-working detectors. Even Smoke Detectors that are hard-wired to y our homes electrical system need to have fresh backup batteries. Batteries should be replace at least yearly, if not twice each year.


5. Candles should be never be left unattended. They should be placed in appropriate holders away from curtains and other flammable objects.


6. Kitchen fires are one of the most common types of fires and they happen all year long. Many are caused by unattended grease spills on the stove or in the oven. Other causes are loose clothing hanging near a flame.

Finally, have an escape plan. This is the one thing that you can do to make sure that no one gets hurt.
