Strategy: Who's Answering Your Phone?

Have you ever thought about how you answer your business phone?

In my previous positions in the industry, I often had to return phone messages from real estate professionals. I had a name and a number, but I didn't know if that number was for a direct line or an office line. No problem, right? After all, anyone in real estate or lending is going to immediately identify themself when they answer the phone because they know the importance of name recognition.

Unfortunately, less than 50% of the agents, lenders, or office assistants that I called identified themselves or their business when answering their business phone.

I'm not looking for "Hi, this is Frank Jewett with Technology for Real Estate Professionals, YOUR SOURCE for technology and marketing training that makes sense!"

A simple, "Hello, this is Frank" or Bill or Jane or Thuy would do.

Is this subject too basic for a marketing and technology blog?

I'd like to think so, but my industry experience has taught me otherwise.

Here are a couple of suggestions for owners, managing brokers, and agents with assistants:

1. Call your agents and assistants to hear how they answer their business phones.

2. Call your office to hear how your phone is answered when you aren't there.

As a broker, agent, lender, or vendor, getting your phone ring is usually the first step to generating business. How you answer the phone establishes your professionalism and sets the tone for the rest of the conversation, so greet the caller and identify yourself.

Thanks!

You couldn't be more right. Half the agents I call simply say "hello" or mumble something. I feel like I'm intruding!

I'd have to concure.  Even though I've been guilty of it from time to time, I have to admit that when someone picks up the phone I'd like to be aware if this is the person I'm trying to get a hold of or not.  Though, when a receptionist picks up I have a good feeling for that and don't always expect it.

I agree...I ALWAYS answer with my name.  I do not like calling agents to schedule a showing...or other business and they just say "hello" I always have to ask "is this.....with XXX Realty?" then sometimes it's almost like I woke them up... "oh yeah, how can I help you?"

I am both happy and sad to see that my experience was not unique.

This is so basic, it should be on the licensing test. ;)

Hi Frank,

"This is Leslie"  I am so trained that half the time I say it the same way when I answer the telephone at home.

Good Post--it needed to be said!

Frank, They aren't going to last anyway. The new business model will be very lean. Only the very best will survive.
