'They Have Taken Our Silence'

Am I the only one that feels it??? That we are constantly bombarded by sounds - noise!  I remember watching the movie KUNDUN about the life of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama - in one part of the movie, after the Chinese troops have invaded Tibet and occupied Lhasa, the Dalai Lama makes the comment 'they have taken our silence'. He was referring to the loudspeakers posted everywhere that spewed out propaganda constantly.

I saw those same loudspeakers doing the same thing when I visited what used to be Czechoslovakia. It was under communist rule and it was so apparent with the red stars and loudspeakers!!! Propaganda and lack of silence - brainwashing!

But we are brainwashed daily too - television, radio - sounds are everywhere! And if you keep them off, there are the sounds of cars, horns, you even hear the sound of the electricity in your house! The appliances humming in the background!

Modern man has lost his silence!!! Many of you might not think this is a big deal, but for those of you that understand what I am saying, imagine the effect this has on your body! I listened to Dr. S. Gupta on CNN this morning while I was doing my morning exercises - he spoke of stress. That is the effect all of this noise has on your delicate human body - STRESS!

That is why I love to have everything possible turned OFF! I gobble up all of the silence I can get!!! I love it!

This is just a food for thought post! Think about it - let me know your thoughts!

This made me think of a sign I saw outside a little country church recently that said, "If you want to hear God's voice, turn down the world's volume." That made me think... When in the car, I always had the radio on, pretty loud when by myself. So I turned it off and just rode quietly, and by the time I made it to where I was going, I was so much more relaxed and ready for the meeting. It has now become a habit. I am actually enjoying the (relatively) quiet time in the car, finding myself more relaxed and prepared, and definately hearing God's "voice" more often.

Silence has become highly underrated in our culture, but more people should try it!

Amber - you are so right! My daughter always asks how I can travel without music in the car (she is 27) and I tell her that I appreciate the silence.

Barbara-Jo & Bill....  I think one of the quietest places I have been in recent years is the back (or eastern) section of Babcock Ranch --- No cars, autos (once I turned mine off and got out of it), planes, people... just the wind through the trees.  It was magnificent.  Thanks for reminding me of the experience.

Yes, silence is golden.  Our world is so full of noise that when we hear the "natural" sounds (that is, the sounds of nature) we are often surprised.  When we bought our property, one of the things we did was spend hours on site just listening.  As a result, most of the noise here comes from birds, coyotes, the wind.  Life is stressful enough without adding all the man made noises to the mix.

Barbara Jo & Bill, I think this post is profound.  I was showing apartments at the Watergate today, explaining how the triple paned windows keep out the jets landing at National Airport and the traffic.  But they also kept out the sounds of birds and wind and waves from the river.  Thanks for this one.

B & BJ - great post and I like the comments of "natural" noise ! There is nothing like the sound of a waterfall or a stream trickling or waves breaking. It is easy to forget to appreciate those things!

Mary - I too love a waterfall! I have a fountain that my daughter once gave me. It is so relaxing!

Deborah - Excellent points! Thank YOU for the comment!

Hello again Barbara. I never thought of the noises that pollute our daily lives until now. I do love the sounds of nature (something I was more aware of in my youth). You clearly illustrated and supported your point of view.

Finding a silent refuge will be my next challenge. The first thing I want to do is dump the TV in the bedroom. We never had TVs in the bedroom growing up, now I see them in the bathroom. how much entertainment do we need?

Barbara-Jo & Bill,

It's so true that the modern world is so full of man-made noise and sounds. Stretches of total silence can really relax and clean up your mind. Going up to the mountains or woods and listening to the natural sounds is also relaxing.

Barbara-Jo,  I absolutely loved this post of yours. I too am a huge fan of silence. I rarely watch television and only have music turned on the odd time, however generally when I am home, writing, dreaming, reading, etc...it is silent.

Interesting take on the brainwashing slant...so very true. Our brains are computers and are constantly being programmed by that which is bombarding them from the outside world.

I couldn't agree more. Try this when you get home. Turn everything off in the house, but turn the TV on and mute it. Now sit in front of the TV, sound off and your eyes closed. It's an assault to your senses.

I'm a huge believer in silence. Somebody said prayer is us talking to God, silence is God talking to us.

I ADORE this post!

My favorite out of bible: "Be still and know that I am God".  Similar to a previous comment.

I have two young children.  I often drive with no music, our household has "quiet time" for an hour where we all just do something quietly, and I love to jog.  Jogging puts me in my own mind for some time (see my post on my half marathon).

Thank you!
