Choctaw River Parade: The End of a Tradition?

Krewe of Choctaw

In an email from the Captain of the Krewe of Choctaw this morning, it was announced that the annual River Parade may be in jeopardy...another victim in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Prior to the 2006 Mardi Gras season, the River Parade was held on one of the ferry boats that usually travels between Algiers and Canal Street on the Mississippi River.  A unique event, the ferry boat would cruise up and down the river, followed by the fire boats, Coast Guard and tug boats.

Post Katrina, with no ferry boat available to use, the River Parade was moved onboard the Steamboat Natchez and Choctaw continued to hold the parade, starting from the Gretna ferry landing.  This 70 year tradition of the only krewe to hold a River Parade in the New Orleans area may, sadly, be coming to an end.

For the 2008 Carnival season, there is still no ferry boat available for the River Parade.  The Steamboat Natchez has almost doubled the price of renting the vessel for this event.  Choctaw has been dedicated to remaining a family friendly krewe and has kept their dues low to encourage participation in the West Bank Mardi Gras celebration.  This price increase by the Natchez has resulted in a budget shortfall that may mean the cancellation of this decades long tradition.  The krewe, which is a non-profit organization, has insurance coverage for docking and other fees already in place, but cannot absorb this price increase that the Steamboat Natchez blames on rising fuel and labor costs.

If ANYONE knows of a local business that would be willing to help in sponsoring or co-sponsoring this traditional West Bank Mardi Gras event (scheduled to take place on January 19, 2008) please contact the Captain of the Krewe of Choctaw at (504) 364-3963 or (504) 616-3710.  Help keep the West Bank Mardi Gras tradition alive!

Lisa - A couple things................Number one...Thank you for pointing out the tragedy of Katrina was in small part the storm and in a much greater measure the failure of the levee's. Hand's in tils and overlooked bills and bureaucratic snafu's continue to plague MY CRESCENT CITY. Please send me an email with more information about where donations may be made.

I refuse to accept that the national indifference to the plight of a city inside the continental united states will win out. Those that think they were not part of the problem need only remember the end of August in 2005. Did you sit on your couch and wonder why the Federal Govt. didn't address the problem more quickly? Did you sit on your couch and wonder why those at the State level didn't step in more quickly? Did you sit on your couch and wonder whey city officials did not address the problem more quickly?

Well, you can sit on your couch and learn some of the answers by watching "After the levees broke". But then, I have to point out, you are still sitting on your couch.

Thousands of Americans still do not have the most basic of human necessities. They need blankets, they need sheets, they need towels, they need plates, they need forks, spoons and knives, they need pots and pans. They are the working poor that steadfastly remain with the hope that one day Americans will remember them. Go to family to family and click on the Katrina relief button.

Don't just sit on your couch.

Lisa.....sorry, I just couldn't help myself. Much love and compassion to you and your neighbors.

Carole, I appreciate your thoughts...I know that they are always with us.

John - Wow!  I'm liking you better every time we dance together in the rain :)  I'll have the Captain email you separately.  I just hate to see a long time tradition fall by the wayside over nothing more than money.

I hope you find success in saving this tradition, Lisa.  I have seen several Arizona traditions die in recent years through far more mundane circumstances, and it is always sad to see the abrupt end of an era.  Good luck with your push for sponsorship, and I second your opinion of John.  The man simply oozes character.  If that is a clumsy compliment, my apologies.

Paul - thanks for the encouraging words.  So much is different here since the storm that I cling rather tightly to the things that have always been.  As for John, he does ooze character, doesn't he?  After I read his comment, I started yelling at my husband (no, not like that) to show him the comment John left..it almost made me cry to see how caring he is, and I am definitely NOT a cry baby.

Gail, thank you so much for your offer of help.  Unfortunately, it is nothing but a money issue - the krewe needs donations of any kind.

You have to remember that Mardi Gras is a FREE event for the public...the cost is borne by the krewes who put on the parades and the cities who supply law and traffic enforcement.  The krewe bases the amount of dues charged on a budget for the parade (and river parade) and makes up the difference in various fund raisers throughout the year.  Unfortunately, the news of a price increase came this week...not long enough to plan for another fund raiser to offset the cost.  If they can't raise the money (and quickly!) there will be no river parade :(

Lisa,  I'm so sorry that the River Parade may be cancelled.  I'm sure a lot of New Orleans residents and tourists will miss this much loved event.  That parade is a tradition, I can't believe they doubled their price -- they should be donating it to the Krewe for the Parade!  It's for Mardi Gras which brings in tourists and money to the entire New Orleans area!

Can you tell us how much is needed?

Judi, thanks for your thoughts!  The krewe is trying to raise $2,000, which is not alot for a corporation but a big deal for a non-profit without enough time to plan and execute another fundraiser.  Any help we can get from local businesses would be terrific.
