Community Supported Agriculture in Newburgh NY

Those Working Girls are Busy!  Hen

Two years ago I found out that I had a “CSA ~ Farm” right around the corner from my front door. I passed by this home and land every day as I drove to just about everything I did on a daily basis. I never paid that much attention until I started to see activity happening with the clearing of the property and a plan for some sort of garden. Little did I know it was going to be an adorable farm. Stonegate Farm was online along with Matthew Benson the owner,(a professional photographer and farmer)  with his family.

Fruit Small as it is, the property supports a two acre parcel designated as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).  A collective of sorts as the locals reimburse the farmer, for his efforts. Together the benefits are enormous. and the veggies are amazing. I never knew I could eat marigolds in my salad!

Early this season in spring when I pass the farm I could see work has been started to prepare the farm. Prep  time  starts way before the planting season. It has been a mild winter, and with the great weather things are underway already.  I am excited to start again as farm fresh veggies are available starting in June until the end of the summer.

Hen House

I enjoy the weekly visits as I subscribe for the season and look forward to picking up my share every Saturday. The treat starts when I enter the gates to the property and start to walk around the beautiful home to the backyard. Chickens are usually running around, and  I can usually count on being greeted by the “the working girls” as Matt Calls them, dining on bugs in the grass. Further along in the middle of the farm is my favorite part.. the little red hen house. This in the center of the farm, and where the hens they lay those beautiful eggs! I never knew that they could be so many different colors.

Community Supported Agriculture is gaining in popularity as they are local, and provide the best quality produce around. The green factor is that they don't need to travel far to my dinner table. Stonegate Farm is just down the street and around the corner from my home. It is nice to know I'm supporting a local farm and helping out those working girls.

Laura and Carole ~ It is a really beautiful home, with extra land that could be used to farm.. The owners decided to go for the permits and have this farm that provides for the owners, and anyone that wants to participate! He is looking for interns this year to help with the work....

Roger~~ I only get to Manhattan once in a while... This farm is about one "city block" from my front door.. Although rural looking in my neighborhood, I'm not really a country girl..

Cool!  Wish I had one of those nearby.  I have a cousin in CA who has 3 chickens and a beautiful coop she built with her son ... in their backyard in the suburbs!  They get fresh eggs (in different colors, as you mentioned) every single day.  Yum!

Cariae~ The hens are really fabulous.. they are beautiful too. He has some really unusual looking hens there. Matt had one rooster.. for about a month.. then the rooster had to go... Nobody wants a rooster in their yard in the morning. They are just too loud!!

Debb ~~  A beautiful place indeed. The estate has some really cool history. I'm planning to video when i go this summer and do a tour!! As far as the " working girls in Newburgh" well, my husband and i had thought of that before and had quite a few laughs.. I had thoughts on writing the article differently, then i said.. maybe not such a good idea. I think you would have liked the twist!! Seems we share a sense of humor!

Janis, I never knew they were called a CSA, I bet we have a few of them in our neighborhood that qualify as the same. And if you've seen a few of my blogs, you'd know I have chickens (8 of them) and my italian husband plants a pretty good garden too, with all we manage to sare and give away maybe we can be called a CSA. LOL

Janis, we have many CSAs in my area and they get great support from the locals.  It is a wonderful alternative to having your own garden and you know you are getting great produce and more.  Good to see the working girls hard at work!!

Ellen ~ You may want to look into the zoning laws where you are. If you do the right things and make it a CSA and sell it off to a few.. you may qualify for some property tax reductions.. now that IS a great thing here in the great state of New York!! Idid not catch that you have the chickens.. although i did see other things about you .. like that you do have the cops patrolling your front yard? Maybe you have working girls there too?? LOL Just a thought! after all .. i hear you were a bad girl!

Ginny ~ Everyone loves the working girls! Some of his girls look very different than the usual chickens we see. I'm anxious to get back there this spring to take more photos! Seems that this farm and the chickens are a popular blog subject.. who would have known...

Great photos! My last vacation in Germany was a week on a farm in Bavaria with the kids before we moved to the States........they had a blast, feeding the animals, collecting eggs and riding horses!
