Encinitas is made up of 5 communities, Olivenhain or "olive grove" in German, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Leucadia, New Encinitas and Historic Encinitas. All of the communities in Encinitas are beautiful and unique in their own way. Where did the name Encinitas come from? That's a long story. The Spanish Missionaries converted a local Indian tribe the Dieguenos to help build missions throughout which is now Southern California. The Governor of Baja California, Gaspar de Portola, in 1669 set out on an expedition to build several presidios to spread Christianity. As they were passing through the Encinitas area Gaspar de Portola named the area "Encina Canada" or hills of live oaks.
Like the other coastal San Diego communities the railroad came in, the people followed and the town was started. Encinitas has a certain laid back and exclusive feeling about it that makes it very unique.
