A Weekend to Remember in Abingdon Virginia! Have A Great Memorial Day!
For Memorial Day weekend, my wife and I decided to get away and enjoy ourselves in the sleepy historic town of Abingdon VA. Our adventure began at a quaint little cafe ..."Pecan 102" as we scarfed down a delicious BBQ sandwich before our ascent into White Top Mountain.
White Top Mountain is a great place that begins our journey of the famous Creeper Trail where all those who love to bike and don't quite qualify for the Tour de France can enjoy themselves for a leisurely 17 mile ride along a beautiful hiking/biking trail (with most of it being downhill)!! The day was beautiful...sunshine and mildly cool - just perfect for a bike ride down the serene and nature filled Creeper Trail.
The city of Damascus (where White Top Mountain is located) is filled with bike shops where you can rent a bike and be trucked to the top of the mountain by van. We and 8 other adventuresome people loaded up our bikes and gear and headed for the top where our excursion would begin.
We were treated to all sorts of scenery including various types of flora and fauna. The trail crosses over open fields as well as Whitetop Laurel river.
After we had ridden 3/4 down the mountain, we stopped at the Virginia Creeper Trail Cafe for a quick snack and took in some Bluegrass music that seemed just about right to energize us for the rest of our trip down. There were plenty of campers and fisherman enjoying their own commune with nature.
When we reached the bottom, our van picked us up in Damascus and we rode back into town to check into our hotel room at the Martha Washington Inn. Each room is different and is an antique lover's delight! Built in 1832, the hotel was originally created as a residence. It has been carefully restored and features 2 restaurants, a spa, a salon, a great indoor pool and a Jacuzzi!
Our last stop of the evening was a trip to the World Famous Barter Theater, which is right across the street from our hotel. We saw the musical - Legally Blonde. The actors did an amazing job and it was well worth the trip ...
Spud who many of you know as my "Market Updater" was also a star ...he was one of the character's long lost pet who "Elle" helped get back to his rightful owner! Spud was our next door neighbor before we moved to our current home ...we still stay in touch and he will always be my "Market Updater"!
I hope you all have a Weekend to Remember!
