Nine Important Things That Will Change The Way You Work

By
Real Estate Agent with North Kansas City Real Estate, Reece and Nichols Residential

Today at our sales meeting we had a presentation my A.J. Gwyn with the Southern Crime Prevention Task Force about personal safety.

The unique thing about this Task Force is they go around the country "free of charge" to companies giving their "personal safety" course and offering personal safety products.

I felt it timely because with the New Year and the market the way it is we all tend to JUMP at the chance to show a client a home, possibly without even giving it a second thought.

A.J. told us that NAR said 1 in 4 agents will come across a criminal.  Those are odds that I found shocking.

These are important things that the Southern Crime Prevention Task Force recommend when it comes to your personal safety.

1. Always meet a client at the office first before going out and showing them property.

2. Always get a copy of their drivers license while you are at the office.  Some offices post a little sign that states that the agents will be asking to make a copy of their drivers license for the protection of everyone involved.

3. Make note of their license number.

4. Make note of the description of their vehicle.

5. Have 911 on your speed dial.

6. Have an ICE contact in your cell phone (ICE= In Case of Emergency:  When entering the number in your phone, enter in the word ICE before the last name that way if a police officer picked up your phone and under your phone contacts punched in the word ICE, your emergency contact would show up immediately)

7.Holding an Open House with a partner reduces your vulnerability by 80%.

8. If you are hauling a client around that attempts to over take you at knife or gun point, use your car as a weapon and run into something... a tree, another car, just anything to keep them from taking you to another location.

9. Don't use home phone numbers on business cards or websites.  You are not only exposing yourself, but your family.

I think the most shocking fact I took away was the technique criminals are using now instead of duct tape to restrain you.  It's super glue.  They super glue your lips together, still allowing you to breath and do what they want.  When they are finished with you, they squirt the super glue up your nose sealing your nostrils together.

This doesn't sound pretty to me and I don't mean to be an alarmist nor do I intend to scare anyone to death. Your average person does not think like a criminal.

So what we need to do is THINK!

Gals, leave your BLING  at home.  Some criminals do their jewerly shopping via realtors!

First and foremost follow your gut instinct in every situation and be aware of your surroundings.  Walk with your head up, alert and with confidence, you'll be less likely to be a victim.

Good Post and rules I live by. Living here in the North East life moves very quickly and when I ask a customer to meet me at the office half the time they laugh at me and ask why not meet at the property?  I explain its office poilicy. 90 percent of the time they end up meeting me at the office and someone Always knows where I am going. The other 10 percent.... I just let em go and to heck with it. Yup, You read right.....My safety comes first.   I think All woman should take care and follow these safety rules.

Fran.....Super glue?  Super glue up the nose? I wonder what will be next.  It is scary out there.  I too believe that we all need to think about safety first.  I atleast carry pepper spray with me at all time.  When with a client, I call the office and let them know their name, our location and whatever else I can.  I will do this in front of the client, so they know they cant get away with anything.  Thanks for sharing.

Good reminder.  I hear these tips every year and still we hear terrible stories.  Your gut feeling is one of the best indicators.  If it doesn't feel right run the other way.

Fran, I think that number 7 should be a standard practice for all Realtors "Holding an Open House with a partner reduces your vulnerability by 80%."

But I never would have thought of number 8 as a means of escape "If you are hauling a client around that attempts to over take you at knife or gun point, use your car as a weapon and run into something... a tree, another car, just anything to keep them from taking you to another location."

And I had never heard of criminals using "Super Glue" that way.

Concetta: Thanks so much for stopping by. You are so right about meeting them AT the office.  My own personal policy is that I no longer taxi clients from one property to the next for various reasons.

Brande:  I know, the super glue threw me for a loop. Sick isn't it? THanks for stopping by!

Barbara: It never hurts for us to be reminded of safety tips.  You are so right about your gut!

George: I'd never thought of using my car as a weapon, but I sure will keep it in mind now!  And about the glue, I thought it was gross but worthy of passing on.  Thanks, as always, for being a faithful reader ;)

Very important info Fran.  I dont think people always think it can happen to them!  There is an agent in my office that loves to wear her bling bling all over.  It shows her success in Real Estate of years past I guess.  If I was a crook - I would want to go "shopping" with her!

Also worth a mention.... A karate expert told me if you need to escape the best thing to do is slam down on the top of a persons foot right where the leg and foot meet. Its a weak point and easy to slam on.

Umbrella Sally?  Is that for letting those wonderful winds in Hawaii float you out of harms way?  Or is it one of those with the sharp point on it? :) ;)
