Renovating the kitchen in your Silver Spring, MD home can be a costly expense, especially when piled on top of other expenses incurred during the home selling process. Fortunately, there are ways to upgrade without compromising on quality and appearance.
1. Reuse
Before you fill the dumpster, take a moment to assess the materials you already have in place and see what can be reused or recycled. Architect Talia Braude says she takes a long, hard look before starting any renovation project to see what can be salvaged. For example, when Braude found floor joists that were too damaged to be structurally sound, she reused them as kitchen shelves, for which they worked perfectly.
2. Cabinetry
Custom cabinets can add to up big dollar signs, so do your research to find a nice balance between value and quality. Simple oaks, cherry, and maple will be less expensive than exotic and/or imported woods, and pressed rather than solid wood interiors and shelves can save a good chunk of your budget as well. Another alternative might be is repainting the cabinets if they are still in good shape, or replacing only the doors if the interior is without damage.
3. Appliances
Homeowners love stainless steel, energy efficient appliances. However, if they are buying a used home there’s nothing impractical about having used appliances in that home. Having said that, search websites like Craigslist for lightly used appliances – you’ll end up paying far less than retail for a product that will attract buyers.
4. Lighting
Lighting is a great way to brighten up a space while highlighting key features. Have a gorgeous granite countertop on the kitchen island? Consider installing inexpensive pendant lighting to really set apart this feature. Another idea is to install lighting beneath cabinetry, or in other “work areas” throughout the kitchen.
