In today's day and age almost everyone owns a cell phone. Certainly those of us in the real estate biz-nass own one.
Due to an aging demographic in our industry, many of those who own cell phones have a difficult time hearing the ringer. I'm certainly guilty of that. There have been many occasions where one of my daughters has had to tell me "Dad, your cell phone is ringing"... when it's hanging right there on my belt and I didn't hear it.
To overcome that issue, many of the agents I know have changed their ringtones to that "old fashioned" ringtone... you know the one that sounds like an old MaBell ringer on one of those old black rotary phones. It's loud and impossible to miss, except by those who are most profoundly hearing impaired.
So we hear that ringer in our office, and around public spaces all the time. It's loud and catches the attention of all nearby.
The issue I have with the super-loud ringers, is not the volume... I understand the need. The problem I have is when the person allows the phone to ring and ring and ring... and go unanswered. Especially when the phone is sitting on their desk, or even in their hand. Sometimes they're even embarrassed by the ringer, and try to cup the phone between their hands to soften the sound.
I guess, what many people don't realize is that most phones... and most brands...across the board... if the phone starts ringing, and you don't want to answer it... you can "mute" the phone immediately by pressing one of the volume buttons on the side of the phone. Yep, works on an i-phone, android, googlephone, Motorola... Give it a try!
It doesn't send the call directly into voice mail, so nobody will know that you're ignoring them. The phone continues to ring, silently, until voice mail picks up. The friendships you may be saving may be your own!
So, people... have mercy on those around you... learn how to use that "mute" button on your phone. Everyone around you will appreciate it.
