Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

In today's day and age almost everyone owns a cell phone.  Certainly those of us in the real estate biz-nass own one.

Due to an aging demographic in our industry, many of those who own cell phones have a difficult time hearing the ringer.  I'm certainly guilty of that.  There have been many occasions where one of my daughters has had to tell me "Dad, your cell phone is ringing"... when it's hanging right there on my belt and I didn't hear it.

To overcome that issue, many of the agents I know have changed their ringtones to that "old fashioned" ringtone... you know the one that sounds like an old MaBell ringer on one of those old black rotary phones.  It's loud and impossible to miss, except by those who are most profoundly hearing impaired.

So we hear that ringer in our office, and around public spaces all the time.  It's loud and catches the attention of all nearby.

The issue I have with the super-loud ringers, is not the volume... I understand the need.  The problem I have is when the person allows the phone to ring and ring and ring... and go unanswered.  Especially when the phone is sitting on their desk, or even in their hand.  Sometimes they're even embarrassed by the ringer, and try to cup the phone between their hands to soften the sound.

I guess, what many people don't realize is that most phones... and most brands...across the board... if the phone starts ringing, and you don't want to answer it... you can "mute" the phone immediately by pressing one of the volume buttons on the side of the phone.  Yep, works on an i-phone, android, googlephone, Motorola... Give it a try!

It doesn't send the call directly into voice mail, so nobody will know that you're ignoring them.  The phone continues to ring, silently, until voice mail picks up.  The friendships you may be saving may be your own!

So, people... have mercy on those around you... learn how to use that "mute" button on your phone.  Everyone around you will appreciate it.

The mute button can come in handy, especially in an elevator.  Then again, so can Gas-X.  Unfortunately not everyone prescribes to those "socially responsible" gestures.

I find it annoying when my own phone rings, I set it to vibrate. I did know about the mute button, but didn't know it continued to ring Alan. Good news.

Gay - that sounds like a cutting-edge plan.

Donna - yeah.. .that's annoying, too.

Tatyana - ya gotta love it.

Richard - I have gone out of my way to "show" some habitual offenders how to use the mute button.  They've been surprised and delighted.

Tom - and there you have it.

Conrad - it's not the volume of the ringer that bothers me... it's the unattended ringing.  Believe me, I know about our demographic... I'm part of it.

As others have stated, putting the phone on vibrate is a good solution.  For some strange reason, people can usually sense the vibration VS just hearing the small sound it makes.  Especially if on a desk or hard surface.  Far less aggrevating for all involved.  Unless, of course, you are hoping to remind people just how busy you are by letting your phone ring .. and ring .. and ring ... and ringggggg .......

Ahhhhh,,,...... silence is after all Golden!  I suppose it would be too much to ask to have one of those buttons stalled on a few select people?  :)

Gene - if you can't manage to figure out how to use the "mute" button... I suppose vibrate is the 2nd best choice.  But I, too, have heard that "buzzzing" when someone leaves their phone on vibrate on the conference table.

Laura - yes dear... a little too much to ask.  But if you can figure it out, you could be a multi-gazillionaire.

Ha Ha, one lady in my office leaves her cell phone on her desk all the time, problem is she is walking around or in the war room most of the time.  The looooud ring is constant.  She gets calls every 5 minutes...

School is never out for the Successful.

It's bad enough in our office meetings, I have to remind agents to turn off or vibrate their phones.
What's worse is not all of them do it!
It makes me wonder what other socially inept things they are doing in their real estate business.

Michael - how annoying.

Suzanne - I hate it when their phones go off in their purses, and it takes them 12 rings just to find the phone.

Alan,

I understand only to well the ability to hear or not to hear.  I don't see the reason to ignore though.  I just send it to voicemail if I am with another client though.  As far as Jason I know what your thinking and good move to not say it even if we all think it.

Gosh I hate that too! I usually mute the call if I can't or don't want to take the call. My problem is I keep pocket dialing people on my favorite's list. I don't want to set the code to lock or unlock the phone. I am thinking that would work. Got any better ideas?
