Assistance for Residents Impacted by Hurricane Isaac
For those impacted in Hurricane Isaac, you can now apply for Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP), aka food stamps. Per the NOLA Ready website: Disaster Food Stamps provide food assistance for eligible low- to moderate-income households that do not receive regular food stamps who need help buying groceries due to lost income or damages following a disaster. The deadline for pre-applying, which they are saying you must do, is WEDNESDAY, SEPT 5.
You can apply here or by calling 1-888-LA-HELP-U. This is why it was so important for Louisiana to be declared a State of Emergency before the storm; so that these funds would be freed up for use by residents and the government for recovery.
For those who had damage to their home (apartments included), you can apply for Individual FEMA Damage Assistance as well. Residents can apply online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call 1-800-621-3362.
Don't be too proud to ask for help. Re-stocking groceries or buying a de-humidifier can quickly add up.
