s How often do you come across a place that's designed to keep alive the dying art of picnicking? Not very often I'd wager. Well, such a place exists in Campbellford, and judging by the grafitti, it's a popular gathering spot for anarchists and occultists. Perhaps they enjoy a good picnic just like the rest of us.
This pretty little spot is right in town, and other than the grafitti on the sign at the entrance seems to be very well maintained. There was nobody there when I visited, but I can imagine in the spring when the weather gets warm, this would be a great place for kids and their owners to come and eat a sandwich and drink a box of juice.
It is a very pleasant setting right on the Trent River, near the heart of town. You can see the concrete piers in the river where the old CN train bridge was, and it's quite obvious that in past days the train would have rumbled right past this spot. Over the years the Campbellford Seymour Community Foundation has taken a number of spots similar to Picnic Park Island and reclaimed them for public use. This organization has a three-fold purpose;
Our purpose is threefold:
- To act as good stewards of the funds realized from the sale of the public utility and further bequests that may follow.
- To provide leadership in identifying community needs and opportunities to improve all citizens’ quality of life.
- To work with community partners to fund and complete projects that will enhance the community of Campbellford/Seymour.
I think every community should have an organization like this, it's quite obvious their hard work has done a lot to enhance the lives of the good citizens of Campbellford. Green spaces like Picnic Park Island can do wonders for the quality of life in a small town.
