What's the CAGE?

It's an odd name for a neighborhood to be sure, but The CAGE in Wilmette is named for the four main streets of this 24 square block neighborhood in East Wilmette: Chestnut, Ashland, Greenwood and Elmwood. Bounded on the east by Sheridan Road, on the west by Green Bay Road, by the village of Kenilworth to the north and Forest Avenue on the south, the CAGE is one of the priciest neighborhoods in Wilmette.

Why Do People Live in the CAGE?

It's a beautiful neighborhood that derives its charm from the brick streets, mature trees, old homes set back from the street and old-fashioned street lamps. It is walking distance to the beach and to shops and restaurants in downtown Wilmette and Plaza del Lago, as well as to the Metra station for those who commute to the city. Anyone who loves vintage homes is sure to be attracted to the CAGE.

What's the Neighborhood Like?

Homes in the CAGE tend to be on the larger side, with 4-6 bedrooms. Most of the homes were built between the 1890′s and 1930′s, though there is some newer construction. The largest lots with the most impressive homes tend to be along Chestnut Avenue. Architectural styles vary but are mostly traditional: Colonials, Tudors, Victorians, 4-squares, etc.

Housing prices are typically $1 million and up, though deals can be had if you are looking for a home that needs work.

What Types of Activities Are Offered Nearby?

One of the biggest benefits of living in the CAGE is its proximity to Lake Michigan and all it has to offer. Gillson Park has a large beach as well as a marina, a dog beach and tennis courts. The Wilmette Park District has a great summer camp program called Great Gillson with all sorts of lakefront activities for the kids.  The Wallace Bowl has free concerts and plays all summer long.

What Schools Will The Kids Attend?

The CAGE neighborhood is served by Central School, the largest of four elementary schools (K-4) in Wilmette. They attend 5th and 6th grades at Highcrest Middle School and 7th and 8th at Wilmette Junior High. Wilmette is part of New Trier Township, so students attend New Trier High School. Freshman go to the Northfield campus on Happ Rd., while upperclassmen attend the Winnetka campus.
