Annoying Pop Ups - OMG, They asked for some personal information!

ANNOYING POP UPS

Do you ask your web site visitors to sign up with a pop up?

An interesting post by Roger Johnson over on Google Plus raises the age old question of asking web site viewers to sign up to access information on your web site. My immediate thought was why not?

Why wouldn't You?

If we compare our web sites (your virtual office) to your physical office the answer becomes obvious.

The Physical Office

In your physical office there is likely a window full of listings with basic information about your listings, and perhaps a few other little goodies, that might entice a prospective buyer or seller to enter your office. Inside the office you have a lot more information about the home buying/selling process that you willingly provide but generally after you have had some time to make a real connection and perhaps even turn that contact into a client.

Your Virtual Office

Your web site has the same "window full of listings" plus the listings from many other Realtors as well. Generally they can get a brief description and a single picture in a stream of listings. But here is where the virtual office and the physical office begin to differ. Some of you let them see the whole enchilada with out even a hello or a thanks for the information from your visitors.

OMG, They asked for some personal information!

Others on the other hand require their visitors to step through the door and say hello I would like some more information about that home you have for sale. They are then willing to provide you with any other information on their web site.

It's time to stop giving it all away for free!

Personally I see no difference between the prospect who comes through the front door of the office and the one who enters the front door of my "virtual office" or web site both are treated the same ...... I want the opportunity to make a connection, to convert that prospective home buyer/seller into a client ..... don't you!

Tire Kickers Welcome

On my site tire kickers are welcome But they just get to kick the tires if they want to sit inside or take it for a ride they have to get the keys

what would be the point of having a website if we weren't trying to capture leads at some point - I agree that we have to collect SOME information!   I agree with everything you have said in this post - Web office should be similar to walk in office...

Kathy-I want some info for possible later contact. My site lets a visitor see one complete listing without providing information. But if they want more, they have to register. I know there are some agents who require no exchange of information, but I think it's a fair exchange.

It is a good question and I see different points of view on this topic.  Some feel there is already so much free information, that the prospects will jump off your site and go to another.  I am wondering if it is too late at this point.  On the other hand, if there is good content on the site, hopefully the will stay.  I can't make up my mind on this issue.  Thanks for asking the question.

I think that's the key to using the Internet - the option to remain anonymous for a while. When they become serious, then they'll tell you what you want to know.

Definitely an interesting discussion, I know there are buyer's representatives that require no registration and have a very successful business.

Wayne - it's your investment in time, energy, education and money the least they can do is say hello ..... if they don't want to be contacted they can block you easily enough or politely ask to be removed from your list.

Jill - if they want to remain anonymous they can have the free information they can also easily get anywhere but come through the door asking for details on any given home and I wan't some information in return.

Not asking for any information limits your ability to try and connect in the hopes of serving their needs. No connection no successful transaction, no happy client to spread the word about you and your amazing web site and services and last but not necessarily the least no paycheck for you.

Liz - I was not unhappy with my results before I started asking for some information but I am much happier with my results now that I do ..... it's all a matter of choice.
