Using Photoshop to Create After Photos Before You Start Work

Apartment building in Historic FolsomI got a call from an apartment manager in Folsom, CA for an estimate to install some stacked stone to the end of some of the buildings. Stacked stone can add value to your property, makes for great curb appeal, and can help attract quality tenants.

The cost of materials can be high so it is a good idea to know what is involved and have a good sense of what it will look like before making that commitment. How can you do this? Well there are programs that can simulate the building materials, but I thought I’d try it with Photoshop.

The owners have an idea for the color and style of the stacked stone they are considering installing, so I searched for an image of that type of product. While the image had to be stacked, manipulated, and edited; it was possible to get a look at the product on the building before doing any work.

What if the owners do not like the after photo? Well, they may be happy that they didn’t spend a lot of money to learn that it wasn’t a good choice. There is a good chance that they may want to see a different product edited into that same photo – a new after photo. Much of the editing has been done, changing the building material wouldn’t take too long to do.

So if you are considering using stacked stone on your building, consider using Photoshop, or similar photo editing software to get a look at what the finished project will look like before starting. It may be well worth the effort.

But don't install it within 4" of the ground!  I assume you have termites there.

That stuff is seldom installed right, and boy, what problems it can create!

Your Photoshop idea is terrific however!  Your clients must really like that.

Tom, I have long been a proponent of Photoshop, but I do not recommend anyone just jumping in with Photoshop, because it requires an adequate computer system and training, and PATIENCE!

Tom, that is a great idea.  I have a feeling that an owner would love this option in the event they didn't like the outcome.  You're a smart guy, Tom.  I hope you got the job.

Nice work with Photoshop.  Did you get the job or do you not know yet?  I tried to use it and as Norman says it is not a simple program so training is required or a lot of patience and a lot of youtube videos.  If I need it, I'll hire it.  My time is better spent elsewhere.

Dorie - I would hope that it would benefit the decision makers involved .

Jay - Great advice. If we are going to do this, let's get it done right.

Norman - When I first got Photoshop, I jumped in. It was very intimidating but I learned by doing. It is a very powerful program with many things that I still do not understand, but what a great tool to use.

Roger D. - Once you get the hang of it, you will find many uses for it.

Thanks Mike. I'm still working on the proposal, it shouldn't be long.

It can take some time at first Roger S. There are some the rather enjoy photo editing; I happen to be one of those guys.
