What Do I Bring to the Table?

By

Not too long ago I was contacted by an ActiveRain member who wrote the following:

Carla,

I have seen a few of your blogs and comments on mine so I figured
I could start with you.

My brother in law is looking to buy a home that he is renting in the East Clackamus [sic] area I think.

They are friends and may be able to execute this between them, but since you specialize in first time home buyers, you might have some insight beyond just writing the contracts for them.

My brother in law has his VA eligibility and his DD214. I am reading up on their program in Oregon right now. I am not sure of his income, but the home will be around $275K.

What can you bring to the table on this beyond just writing a contract and working through title and appraisal?

Thanks

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

At first, I wasn't going to respond at all.  I've only left 1 (ONE) comment on their blog -- ever --  so it wasn't as if I had developed any sort of rapport, as I have with a lot of AR colleagues.

When someone writes: ". . . so I figured I could start with you," it bodes the question, are they serious?  Start with me??  And then what ? . . . end with someone else??

I don't like dealing with people who know people, who have a brother-in-law, or sister-in-law, or a nephew, niece, second cousin twice removed . . . they seem to be the biggest flakes when they call "on behalf" of someone.  You want to refer someone, that's fine.  GREAT!  Thank-you very much.  Contact my office for the standard referral policy and if accepted, then refer them.

Finally, "What can you bring to the table beyond just writing a contract and working through title and appraisal?"

Because this came to me FROM an AR member, who is also a licensee, I wanted to ask THEM the same question!  What would YOU bring to the table in the same circumstances?

I wonder why this person even wrote me.  I doubt they were serious.  AND . . . I found it rather rude.

I did, however, email this person -- and just as I expected I've not heard one a word -- not even a THANK-YOU!

My gut told me not to bother . . .

NOTE TO SELF:  Listen to your gut more often!

What the hell is wrong with people?  I'm in a mood.  Three months of classes, too much rain, cold, keeping the granddog this weekend.  Yeah, I think I would have written a nasty gram back about who they could start with and where they could all be when they ended.

Great point.  I had a similar situation not too long ago but it was a friend of mine's son.  He thought that since he found the house he should get the commission, and what had I done to earn anything?  It didn't take him long to realize the hard work that goes into getting your dream home.  He ended up thanking me profusely when it was all said and done.  They are now in their home and very happy......as the story goes, they lived happily ever after.

Carla, It does have a rather odd feel to it coming from another agent.  From a consumer I'd understand that 'tude, but an agent should know what each of us brings to the table without even asking.

For an AR member, they really are showing their lack of involvement in not having read a thing at all that you've posted about how you do business.  Love your attitude about this one.  I think it's dead on.

Hi Tammy . . . let it out!!  I know you've been working hard, and I've got a question for you:  What do you bring to the table, after all, he's renting there . . . HA HA HA

Hey Brenda -- and we can all thank HGTV for making what we do seem as easy as pie.  Ever try to make a good pie crust, that's not easy either.  Thanks for your comment.

Hi Bliz . . . amazing isn't it!

Hey Chris Ann -- Thanks, and that martini looks good!!  What I brought to the table . . . I emailed and said the home might be a tad over-priced.  Without doing a comp BUT knowing the area, it seemed priced too high.  Oh well, I'm sure they know more then me, and good luck with buying an overpriced FSBO -- which is what this, bascially, is.

Carla...."what can you bring to the table beyond writing up a contract...." Is this person serious?  If they've read your blogs then they know what you can bring to the table!
