Chatham-Kent ' Habitat For Humanity"
Prepares to Build 1st Home of 2013
The family has been chosen and the final plans are being made for gound breaking this Spring of the 1st Home for 'Habitat For Humanity' in Chatham-Kent. Completion is planeed for Fall.
Habitat for Humanity is an organization directed to working people on a modest income who although they do not qualify for Government assistance have little or no hope of ever owning a home of their own. The homes build by Habitat for Humanity are not given away but the recipients of the homes are given interest free mortgages which are held by the organization with payments geared to their individual incomes. Those chosen have to apply,qualify and a requriement of the interest free mortgage is that the new homeowner must perform 500 hours of vounteer work called " Sweat equity ' either on a Habitat project or on other volunteer projects in the community approved by the organization.
Nancy McDowell Executive Directive of the Chatham-Kent Chapter of Habitat for Humanity says they do not give homes away but help those in our community who have no other means of being Homeowners.
Kelly Tompkins and her 2 school age children will be the homeowners of this first build.The 2 bedroom home will be on Bristol Drive on land donated by the Christian Labor Association who have their office next door.
The Habitiat for Humanity Chatham-Kent Chapter is very busy and have already made a committment to have their second home built in 2013 outside of Chatham in the Municipality. They are planning to open a Retail outlet called ReStore in the future where the public can purchase new and gently used donated building materials at a good price.There is also a e-waste recycling day planned for the parking lot of the
Downtown Chatham Centre on Saturday from 8A.M.-1P.M. Check your basements and garages and watch for details on the opening of the new store.
