The trait that Happy People have for this blog is as difficult as any of the other traits that are listed on this list of traits. When it talks of avoiding social comparisons, it means that we shouldn't be compariing ourselves and are circumstances with someone else. It is the "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality. What makes doing this trait even more difficult is that all of the advertisments in the World do this. Even in our own business we are asking people to move up, down size or choose the right neighborhood.
In the classic country song, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson sing "we got a four car garage and we're still building on...". This song talks about how they need to simplify their lives. The real danger in my mind at least when we compare ourselves socially is that we're never satisified with what we have. This extends even to our relationships with family and friends. I am not saying that we shouldn't be motivated to improve ourselves, I am saying that this shouldn't become an all consuming passion for us. Unchecked, this passion to be better than the neighbors or who ever destroys all sorts of relationships, family, friends, even associates.
In my life, I have known a few very wealthy people, one of them once told me that in life, it didn't matter how much money you had, you should never have more stuff than you can take care of personally. He lived a very simple life, he didn't drive a fancy automobile nor wear expensive clothes, he was worth several million dollars, and his lifestyle may have been the reason why he had accumulated so much wealth. In the Ten Commandments we are told that we shouldn't covet our neighbors possesions, or their wife. This is wise counsel, it is good to be motivated to succeed, but not to the detriment of everything else.
This trait is really one of the most difficult in this list to do, it goes against everything that society is telling us. I do believe that it is important that we don't compare ourselves to anyone else, rather we should make ourselves into the best that we can be. Another of the negative traits we attain when we comparing ourselves to someone else is that instead of admiring and emulating successful people, we become jealous of them. We begin to despise them because of their success. This negativity is detrimental to our lives, success should be a positive. I don't believe that a positive can be attained from a negative state of mind!
Don't worry, be happy, avoid Social comparisons! Be the best you that you can be! In the end, it really doesn't matter what your neighbor, your parents, your brother or anyone else was or accomplished in their lives. What matters is who you are and what you have done!
