Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips

Independence Day is  a day of celebration, yet this holiday can be very stressful for our four-legged best friends. Here are some  simple safety precautions they can take to ensure their pets are kept safe this Fourth of July provided by the Arizona Humane Society.

  • Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks. Pets can easily be harmed by or spooked by loud fireworks causing them to run away which can be disastrous on busy streets and in extreme summer heat.

  • Refrain from taking pets to weekend festivities that involve firework displays. These loud displays can easily frighten pets and can cause even those with the best manners to run off.

  • Pay close attention to your pets at all times. Do not leave pets unattended in the backyard as fireworks can send them over the fence or digging to get out. Table food and alcohol can also cause pets to become ill.

  • Keep pets in a quiet, escape-proof room in which they feel safe and protected. Background TV or radio noise may help as well as their toys, bedding, food and water.

  • Have plenty of water nearby. Animals that are panicked will pant and become dehydrated, and often will not move to look for a water source. Place a bowl of water directly beside your pet.

  • Make sure pets have multiple forms of up-to-date identification. Pets can easily wiggle out of collars and ID tags, therefore up-to-date microchips are best.

Though banned, people in my neighborhood have already started setting off fireworks. and gone are the days of "Black cats" and sparklers. Today people buy stuff they have no business being responsible for.

Doug, what were those black snake things we used to put on the ground, light, then they grew like black worms and left a horrible mess on the driveway?  They used to drive my parents  NUTS, lol.

Joni, my two will bark at the first one, then they just ignore the rest.  Same thing with thunder.  Thank goodness!!!!

Juli, great information for pet owners.  I read where more animals are taken in over the 4th of July holiday than almost the whole year combined!!!  Scary thought.

Good morning Juli -  You have provided some good information and reminders for Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips.  Dixie normally sits beside or in our laps when fireworks are going off.  Pet safety is often times forgotten.... great reminder.

Juli, I hope all the pet owners follow this advice.  I have one dog that is scared to death of fireworks, we will not leave her alone.

Great advice -  I've found the bigger the dog, the bigger the chicken :)   One thing I've found that helps mine, for fireworks or thunder, is an aerosol can of air freshner.  For some reason, spraying that in their 'safe' room changes something in the ozone???   I'm fully sure other than that it works for my scaredy cat dogs!

Juli, I think a lot of pet owners who love their pets can tend to forget about how stressful the festivities can be for their pets. Humans can all caught up with the BBQ's and fireworks as their pets escape or endure more stress than necessary. <S>

Our Jazzy is afraid of all loud noises. I wouldn't think of taking her anywhere near fireworks. Great and timely post, Juli.

Juli, I was just going to agree with you how helpful background noise can be to help drown out the fireworks noise, but my dogs are barking as I speak while my wife runs the vacuum cleaner!!!   They can hear the fireworks over the vacuum clearner!  Oh well!

Juli- one of our fur babies is just terrified and though fireworks of the go boom in the sky type are not legal here, there are plenty of people who go out of state and bring them in.  We keep the kids in with us and have some sort of block it out noise, television, radio and always stay home.
