At What Age Can you Leave You Child Home Alone in Loudoun County?

By

I have two little girls that are ten and seven years old. I would never leave them home alone, they are just too young. However, we have a neighbor who routinely leaves her ten and six year old girls home alone for six, eight, twelve hours....even overnight. Apparently she also leaves them home alone to wait for the cable repairman. Can you say S-C-A-R-Y. I shudder to think what could happen...

Unfortunatly in Loudoun County VA, there are no laws. There are only "guidelines" that the county considers minimal acceptable standards for the supervision of children. They recommed that children in middle school or younger always have adult supervision.

These are the supervision guidlines taken directly from the Loudoun County VA website.

Age 0-9: Should not be left unsupervised

Age 10-12: Should not be left unsupervised for more than 3 hours

Age 13-18: May be left alone longer than 3 hours

Under 16: Should not be left alone overnight

I hope this helps you determine what is right for your child. I always err on the side of caution and being conservative with young children. You never know what could happen when you're not around to supervise kids a very young age. Better safe than eternally sorry.

Surprising!

Oklahoma has similar:

Q: How old does my child need to be before I can leave him home by himself?
A:
There is no law or policy in Oklahoma for how old a child has to be in order to be left alone. Here are the recommended guidelines for parents:

  • Infants and children under 6 years of age should never be left alone without adult supervision.
  • Generally, grade school children who demonstrate the ability to be responsible and mature may be left alone one or two hours during the day with access to a responsible adult.
  • Grade school children should never be left to care for younger children.
  • Middle school children who demonstrate the ability to care for themselves without help may be left alone for up to four hours during the day and evening.
  • Middle school children may care for one or two younger children if there is constant access to a responsible adult.

Wonder what Loudoun County Social Services would say about a 6 and 10 year old being left alone overnight?

This is just crazy.  And you made me look at Georgia because I had always heard it was 12 for up to 6 hours.  Nope, that's just a recommendation.  I did leave my daughter at home at 12, but only because my mom was right next door.  The first time she was really on her own was at 14  and over and then it was just from after school until I got home from work.

I just can't imagine Social Services would approve of a 6 and 10 year old being left home alone overnight.  And not wise at all to allow them to wait for the cable repairman.

I would have thought more states would have LAWS pertaining to this. Guidelines really don't do anything.

Cindy and Kathy, I would imagine the same. Not sure what will happen going forward...

Interesting - I'll have to see what the guidelines are for my area.
