I have two little girls that are ten and seven years old. I would never leave them home alone, they are just too young. However, we have a neighbor who routinely leaves her ten and six year old girls home alone for six, eight, twelve hours....even overnight. Apparently she also leaves them home alone to wait for the cable repairman. Can you say S-C-A-R-Y. I shudder to think what could happen...
Unfortunatly in Loudoun County VA, there are no laws. There are only "guidelines" that the county considers minimal acceptable standards for the supervision of children. They recommed that children in middle school or younger always have adult supervision.
These are the supervision guidlines taken directly from the Loudoun County VA website.
Age 0-9: Should not be left unsupervised
Age 10-12: Should not be left unsupervised for more than 3 hours
Age 13-18: May be left alone longer than 3 hours
Under 16: Should not be left alone overnight
I hope this helps you determine what is right for your child. I always err on the side of caution and being conservative with young children. You never know what could happen when you're not around to supervise kids a very young age. Better safe than eternally sorry.
