How To Advertise . . . NOT!

How NOT to Advertise

We are constantly bombarded with HOW TO market, HOW TO advertise and HOW TO promote our product, ourselves, our brand.

The other day I saw this ad --------------->

The ad appeared on the side next to a game I was playing on-line.  Unfortunately, the screen cap tool wouldn't work, so I took a photo of the ad and this is how it turned out.

This is for a restaurant, and although blurry and a little out of focus, do you notice anything in the ad that seems rather odd?

The clearer version which I was trying to capture (did the best I could) seemed to be missing something.

It's an advertisement for a restaurant, and there is NOTHING ON THE TABLE.  There's no food, no delicious looking sizzling fajitas, or frozen strawberry margaritas to entice us.

Oddest NON-Advertising I've ever seen . . . EVER!

Someone should tell the restaurant that if they're going to pay for advertising they might want to include a picture of their FOOD!

We can learn a lot from this HOW NOT TO ADVERTISE message!  This is indeed, food for thought!

Carla: I'm trying to find a reason why they would do this. Were they going to superimpose food on the shot? Did they think people would find this funny and remember it? My favorite kind of ad is the one that tells me what I'm supposed to be buying.

Carla,  Very strange, indeed.  It almost looks like a mistake of sorts ... mistake outside the obvious. What's up with the save 74%.  I don't know that I would want to eat at a restaurant and save 74%. It would tell me I was likely eating last weeks' food that did not sell.

Hi Hella . . . it's really weird.  I want to look at food, I love to look at food and there is nothing on the table

Hey Kathleen -- it's been running for a few weeks now, and I just had my camera near me this time (tried to screen cap it, but it didn't work).  When I first saw it, it was "huh?"

I got a postcard from a spa the other day that advertised a Himalayan Salt Room and all the symptoms it would cure.  I had none of the symtoms...guess it's not for me and threw the card out.

Right, this makes no sense.  They should be showcasing their #1 asset.

I think this is a mistake on the medium it was being presented. That picture usually has 4 shots of tequilla and some lime wedges on the bottom where the white strip letting you know it is La Fogata seems to be covering it up.

Just an observation which supports your how not to advertise. WHile the original picture might have been a great ad, the execution of utilizing it in this particular medium is what not to do. Good catch.

That really is a useless ad.  I see stuff like this and it always comes across as some idea a marketing person thought might be cool but really just misses the mark.

An interesting twist, but wouldn't you expect to get something when you pay for it? Funny, but for this nothing they still paid what they would have paid for something meaningful...
