A Very Unique Marketing Idea- Movie Madness!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Five Star Real Estate

When I first started out in this business I was eager to get my name out there but I wanted to do it in a fun way. I wanted to be unique and have people remember me beyond the marketing dollars I would need to spend.

I went to  the local movie theater (Celebration Cinema in Grand Rapids) and rented an entire theater room and Hot buttered popcornalong with that, a premiere PG rated movie. At that time the movie premiering was Freeky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. It was perfect for all ages and all audiences. I also struck a deal with the manager that would allow me to include free popcorn and pop for each person that I invited. The theater allowed me to print up my own tickets with my card stapled to it. I actually went door to door through out the community, introducing myself and giving out free tickets. People were very friendly and excited to get free tickets. No strings attached. The only thing I asked is that they take the tickets ONLY if they would use them. Otherwise I just gave them my card in case they either changed their mind or had real estate needs. I also had friends and family members giving the tickets out to their sphere of influence.

I did not know if I would get anyone actually coming on the movie night. I was hoping I would at least fill it 1/2 way. It was a HUGE success. The theater was filled!!

tickets

When people turned in their tickets I asked them to put their name and contact info on the back of the ticket for a drawing. Right before the movie started I did the drawing and gave away a cool yard game. I also used that moment to thank everyone for coming and to introduced myself as a new business professional in the community eager to serve them with any of their real estate needs. I kept it short and sweet. I kept the tickets as a way to follow up with each person, find out if they enjoyed themselves and to thank them again for coming. I also used that phone call to find out if they had any real estate needs or if they knew of anyone who was in the market to buy or sell a home.

This proved to be a great way to not only target an area but it was really not that expensive for the impact I was able to make on so many people.

I spent close to $1,000 for everything from the theater, movie, popcorn and pop for everyone plus printing for the tickets. I would recommend it as it has lasting results. I have had people contact me long after and say "you were the one who had that fun movie night."

Hi Serena- No I have not done it since but I am planning on doing it again soon. This time I am gong to do it with an affiliate or two. ie. a lender and home warranty co. or inspection co. These being companies that I refer to my clients. This would help defray some of the cost.

Hi Christine,

Thanks for your comment. Yeah it was cool. I would like to do it again but it does take time to organize it. I was thinking about doing it again to market myself in another community here in Grand Rapids where I live.

HI Norma! Thanks for the comment. Yeah it worked out well for me. I just ran into someone the other day who told me he remembered me from coming to the movie night. I did this a long time ago.

HI Stephanie! Well let me start out by saying it helps to network. Do you know anyone in the theater business? If not make an appointment to meet with a VP, or a higher up in marketing or management. Find out if there is a way you could team up to market you and the theater. A win-win for both. I did during a time when we could use premiere movie (one coming out but not to the public yet). I picked a "feel good" funny, family type movie. This is best for the kind of audience you want to attract.

I think it only ended up costing me 1000 - 1500. It was a pretty minimal investment but I did network. The next time I do it I am going to do it with a local lender and maybe another co. ( like a home warranty co.) and split cost. This will also help to get word out.

Best wishes if you decide to do it. IT'S FUN!

Sue

Sue; All I can say is WOW!  Most of realtors would be afraid to spend that much on something so different. Of course you can easily spend that on an ad or two.  Once again - WOW!

Now this is what I call great PR.  You established yourself AND provided a wholesome family outing.  More REALTORS should stand up and take notice.  The $1,000 price tag is well worth it.  Finding a way to relate to your target audience can be the most difficult part of building a brand.

Most people think of PR as the typical Press Release and Press Conference (which most REALTORS feel they have nothing worth while to announce), but in reality, PR has evolved into Social Relations.  By using traditional and inventive ideas you can touch moe people in a personal way than relying on a doorhanger.  When we add the social media aspect into, you have a tremendous amount of influence in your community.

Great Job and keep the original ideas coming.

We had an agent do this with a college football game that was blacked out in the area. The theatre over filled and he raised a lot of money for a local hospital while he served the popcorn and coke in cups and boxes with his name on it.

Not sure what you mean by the college football game being "blacked out" and then you talk about the theater event. Are you saying because there was no game everyone went to the theater? So this must have been planned well in advance. How did he advertise? Sorry I am trying to figure out how the night went. Can you please explain more. Curious what movie he showed too (if you know) and how he was able to use his own cups and boxes for marketing in the theater. I dont think our theaters would allow that. If you can go into more detail I would love to hear more about this. I am considering doing another movie night but this time using a lender to help sponsor the event. Thx! Sue
