If Octoraro Orphie sees his shadow on Groundhog Day winter will hang around for six more weeks! If he doesn't spring is just around the corner. But this year there is an even bigger mystery surrounding Orphie. Experiencing the coldest winter in two decades Rick Rankin, the Hibernating Governor of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville PA, worries that Orphie's followers may not be able to coax him out of his hole. Rankin stated that they have a number of contractors in their Lodge and they considered building a “protective dome” over the entire Southern End of Lancaster County but they probably couldn't get the permits processed in time. So they've decided to coax rather than force their hero from his liar.
In addition to Orphie the Baby Groundhogs (new members accepted into the Lodge) will be dunked in the Octoraro Creek as their initiation into the order. It's possible that a hole may have to be cut in the ice first.
Regardless if Orphie emerges or not. Regardless if he sees his shadow or not. The public is invited to the celebration at the Lodge located on White Rock Road, Colerain Township beginning at 8 AM Sunday February 2nd. Coffee, donuts and prognostication are guaranteed.
