"Made in US" and "customer service" in retail

Shoe Shopping!! and these two phrases are hardly what you think of, more like oxymorons.  In this day of the imported $20 dollar cheap imports piled high at the big box or discount stores.

In-fact, in my 15 years in the US, I really thought the idea of customer service was being walked to the shoe isle in some of the better big box stores.  And when I asked if a shoe was made in the US I was laughed at.

Well, I am starting to have problems with my feet and was directed to Morgans Shoes a well known establishment in Hilldale Mall Madison Wisconsin.

I was blown away.  First the sales staff are qualified and trained in feet and shoes.

Then i was asked what i was going to use the shoe for?  I was measured for length and width.  Another new experience.

I was brought a shoe which was a perfect fit and the same with some Walking shoes.  They happened to be the only US made: dress shoe SAS- San Antonio Shoe, and the trainer from New Balance.

Great service great shoes

I was given a free pair of Smart wool socks, and my feet have never felt so pampered, worth every bit of what I paid.  (yes it was more than wal mart prices, but the extra went to an American worker and a local store and the shoes fit. and worth every penny).

Thanks Jeff, for the experience and the great shoes.

PS I have heard people say it is important to buy lots of cheap crap at a discount store.  I disagree.  If I can not afford it or don't need it I don't buy it. I buy quality stuff and less of it and I buy locally. see Dane buy local group

This country is in a crisis because too many jobs have been transferred overseas.  (companies have too much of a cost incentive to do so)  this results in more money going out of this country and not making enough money here, hence a trade deficit.

Next thing you know there are no good paying manufacturing jobs in the US and The Real Estate industry wonders why no one can buy our homes.  see Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania.  Not to mention that Wal mart has put out of business the mom and pop stores who were small business owners who could also buy homes, unlike the part timer in the big boxes.

Nineteen years of excellence!
As I get older I really notice the difference between service and sales, quality and a deal. Customer service is becoming a thing of the past and I personally will pay more to get it.

Hi Guy~ Great post! "I was measured for length and width.  Another new experience. " Funny. I was in my 30's and went to a shoe store like you speak of. When they measured me I found out my feet were a full size and a half different! When I told my Mom she said, "Mary, don't you remember when you were little I used to buy you two pair of shoes?" Golly, I don't remember that! I said, "Mom. I am thirty something. Don't you think it is about time you told me I have two different size feet!"

Ah...for the service of old mom and pop stores and folks who care enough about their products to learn about them! Great reminder!
