The Flowers That Bloom in the Spring, The Peony

Our Peony Blossomed and it is Spectacular

Spring is wonderful for it's colors and for us the blooming of our peony plants is anxiously awaited. The plants are big and when in full bloom, a blossom can be almost 8 inches across.

Once they start to form, I have to stake them as they cannot support the weight of the blossom. The description of the plant can vary but dates back to Greek mythology.

"Peonies are known as the flower of riches and honor. With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage."

Whatever they might be considered, in our yard for a brief period, usually no more than a week, the colors just bring a smile.

Ed,

I always loved the peony bush. When I lived in Northern, IL, a man was cutting them up and throwing them to the trash. I asked him if I could have some. He went back and cut me a long stem. I managed to root it after waiting a long, long time and I was successful. The bush needed lots of TLC and it continued to give much joy. I miss it terribly. Your photo brought back fond memories. I can't grow them here in Texas.

Ed- I love peonies but I don't think they do well in Florida.  I'll have to settle for looking at yours.

Those pictures remind me of my mother's garden in summer.  She often raised peonies.

Good morning Ed. Ours are in full bloom as well. The color is wonderful, but wish they would last longer.

Ed, the peony sure adds lots of color to landscaping!   I sold a home that will close in a couple of weeks, and has at least 4 bushes of peonies, and they were in complete bloom at inspection.
