Seller's Swastikas Killed The Deal

By

Home Selling MistakesI've encountered some colorful people along both sides of the real estate aisle.  What amazes me most are the things that sellers do (sometimes unknowingly) to kill a potential sale.  Ode to dreadful seller mistakes!

In my early years of showing property, I witnessed a 950-pound pig giving birth to 9 piglets in one of the bedrooms of a beautiful log home.  What the heck was the seller thinking?! Seriously, there was a giant barn outside that could've housed Charlotte's web and a host of other fine characters.

Another occasion, I had a seller answer the door in his skivvies.  He was ticked that we arrived 10 minutes early for an 11am showing.  So, he sat down in his recliner (still in his skivvies) and proceeded to drop the F-bomb throughout the entire showing.  When we got outside, I told my Pastor client that I found him a new parishioner for his church.  We both had a good laugh.

While showing a rural property,  I stumbled upon a newly trenched 20ft hole in the backyard, where it was quite evident that everything but the kitchen sink had been thrown into.  Strangely, at the end of the day, my Buyers wanted to go back for a second showing. When we arrived, we found a heap of old tires added to the pile in flames.  Did I mention the bloody tarp hanging from a lean-to shed?!  Needless to say, we decided not to hang around long enough to question the seller about 'things.'

A recent showing proved to be most offensive.  The seller was present during the showing, which added a layer of discomfort for my buyers.  As we made our way to view two shops, we noticed a swastika symbol custom painted on the back of a chair.  Then another swastika sticker proudly displayed on a wall.  Then a whole room of swastika memorabilia.

When I contacted the listing agent to offer feedback, I asked a pointed question... "Is your seller a Nazi lover?"   His response proved telling... "Realtor/Client privilege."  What the seller didn't know was my buyer's family were German immigrants, and while they liked the home and property, they were totally repulsed by what they saw.  The seller's swastikas killed the deal before the digital ink could even hit the page.  Ode to dreadful seller mistakes!

Oh my, what a bunch of crazy experiences!   And that includes the pigs, the ditch, the skivvies and the swastikas.  Maybe another swastika fan bought that house.

What don't we see in this business!? I once showed a home that had stuffed animal heads on the wall every three feet in a huge room... and my buyer was a vegetarian. Do I need to tell you we weren't in that house very long?

Now THAT'S a new one.  As the listing agent on a home like that, I would definitely step in and recommend making the home more neutral and appealing to all.

There are no words - and that includes a response to some of these comments.

The most important home I sell is YOURS!

And I thought the house with the 8 foot tall taxidermied bear was bad.  Oh no, that agent needs to think about getting rid of this listing.

Wow, just WOW. I think if the seller had interviewed me, I would have asked them to remove the items and if they declined then I would not be the agent for them.

And, birthing pigs? WOW!

The agent should have demanded those to be removed.  How can he or she sell the house with such hateful memorabilia?  I wouldn't buy it on that principle alone either!

When I was around ten, my parents were looking for a new home to purchase in Los angeles.  I will never forget the repulsion they exhibited when we went into the den and saw a giant swastika hanging on the wall.

My parents were immigrants and had fought the Nazis during WWII.  Some sellers will never understand.

Melinda, while this is a free country, some things are just bad taste and I think these sellers need a little guidance from their listing agent.

And where's their listing agent in all of this . . . at an Aryan Race Brotherhood meeting?!?

Those are quite the unique and interesting encounters! I haven't anything quite so outlandish as those.  Can't believe the white supremacist wasn't advised by his listing agent to hide the swastika's.  I know he's probably proud of them but it's not going to make the house sell any faster.

Oh Mel, You have some interesting stories indeed.  I'm shaking my head. I just don't understand most people. Some people just stand their ground while shooting their self in the foot.

Too much decoration and colors usually kill deals.
Who would believe in me when I say

"Millions of our customers preffer to buy our houses because of the quality of  -- - and - - our competitors want to  copy our - -  or no one has declined us ever - - that we have"

It does not matter even if this is 100percent true, who would belive that anyway?

Maybe it's good to put the best images and qualities that you have in a listing... but too much hype can kill even the biggest beasts.

Home is where the hearth is.

I had a seller who had a series of books on his shelf that were Nazi oriented, replete with swastikas on the spines.  I told him that they were offensive, and needed to be removed prior to showings.

He protested, that the Third Reich, and all its trappings, was his field of study, he was a professor at a local university.

I told him that it didn't matter.... they needed to be removed, hidden, or just turned around.  They'd be offensive to potential buyers and could cost him a sale.

He complied.

I think most of the comments here are on the wrong track.  Realtor/Client priviledge to me means that they met at the Klan rally.  Takes one to list one.

Yes they are... Miss Jane ;-)

Penny wise and pound foolish... as they say Praful ;-)

Couldn't agree more Laura!

Lol... Joshua!

You had a better idea for a title for this post Kat... The pigs, the ditch, the skivvies and the swastikas!

I could think of a few... Jill ;-)

Some friends of mine had one of those in their living room too Jeanne!

Yes indeed, it was a 'Wow' Pamela!

Ditto Shannon!

It's chilling... Margaret!

I'd say so... Sybil!

The agent is actually a nice guy... Carla ;-)  But... some people are just no match for some people!

Yeah... it's kinda shocking Kevin!

I don't get it either... Kathleen.  I would've offered professional, yet friendly advice to the Seller regarding 'his' memorabilia.  If it fell on deaf ears, I would've refused the listing.

Who would've believed that a Seller would allow a 900 pound pig to give birth to 9 piglets in a bedroom... Michael! (lol)

You're a stand-up guy... Alan!  I like that about you ;-)

I laughed out loud on that one... Chris & Dick!  I know the agent and he's a good guy... perhaps lacking a bit in good judgment, but I'm confident he's not attending any rallies ;-)
