The Dog Stood Guard Over Him All Week

We had a very sad situation in Alvin on Friday. My surrounding neighbors, John, and I have been taking care of a homeless little old man for about three years. We all fed him and his dog.

Each day he would walk to the convenient store a little ways from our home and sit there all day. My husband and I always made sure he had something hot or cold to drink depending on the weather; and we gave him a few bucks to get what ever he needed in between donations of sandwiches and burritos. This guy never asked for money or food. He never held up a sign, he just sat there never saying much.

Last year while crossing the street he got stuck by a car and was out of commission for a while. I guess his family took him in during his recuperation. After awhile he showed up again pushing a wheel chair and we all started caring for him again. Everyone made sure he was okay.

Over a week ago we noticed he was missing and we wondered where he had gone off too. Everyone was asking for him. Every once and awhile his family would come pick him up and try to get him to stay with them.  That never worked out, he was just happy to live in a very large wooded area. In any case I thought he was with his family again.

Unfortunately, that was not the case... he passed away and his dog stood guard over his body only leaving to eat and drink. The whole community is upset. I don't have the whole story yet; but I am thinking a missing person report was filed and they had to wait for a week before they could go searching for him. Some of the guys I know in PD told me that the dog watched over his body. I will go and ask about the dog today. My friend who works in the animal shelter will get a call from me. I just know many people will want to take the dog in now that his master is gone.

This is just a very sad story.

Sussie Sutton The homeless and destitute in society are faceless. Most people pass by, too rushed to be thankful for their bounty. Hopefully, someone will step foreard and reward the dog for its love to its master.

Sussie it really is a very sad story.  I don't know what type of issues would cause someone to want to live outdoors and not with family but I hope the poor dog gets a forever home.

Victoria and Marshall Henderson.... yes I believe there are many people waiting in line for the dog.  I spoke with my animal control friend and she said that the dog will have to be fixed because she has had many puppies. She is also noted to be a runner and would not come close to anyone else. So they are setting a cage trapped for her.

So sorry to hear that, Sussie. The compassion you and your community members showed to him must have meant the world. What a wonderful reminder to brighten someone's day. Thank you for sharing.

Debbie Laity.... will do.

Signatures.... there continues to be a lot of compassion. I saw that a cross with flowers and a teddy bear have been placed close to the road near the wooded location where he was found.

Tammie White.... I don't think I have ever seen that movie! I think I will try and see it on line.

Lisa Von Domek... I can feel him asking me to please feed his dog. You can bet I will. I saw her today.... crossing the street on the hunt for food. So I will go over by where I think she will most likely return to and leave her some food there. I know the Animal Control people will be upset with me if they find out it is me who is doing it.
