Madeline Island Receives a Mention on Door County Daily News Website
I was pleased to notice that an article on the Door County Daily News website about Washington Island (located just north of the Door Peninsula in northeastern Wisconsin) mentioned Madeline Island. The mention appeared in a link to Barry Adams' April 12, 2015 article in the Wisconsin State Journal, entitled "On Wisconsin: Getting to know the Badger State a Little Better".
Adams' article in the State Journal referred to Madeline Island as "the largest island of the Apostle Islands where students take an ice boat to school in Bayfield during the winter". Unfortunately, the Door County Daily News article erroneously identified Madeline Island as "located in upper Bayfield, in northern Wisconsin" (Madeline Island is part of Ashland County, Wisconsin, among the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior).
Washington Island is a charming place and I've spent a fair amount of time there. A couple of decades ago when I was teaching and performing at the Birch Creek Music Festival in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, some of our music faculty members took every possible opportunity to visit Washington Island to do a little sightseeing.
Speaking about the remote communities on Washington Island and Madeline Island, Adams said, "running a small business there is no easy task". I won't argue with that statement one bit. But the rewards definitely outweigh the challenges.
