Take Care of the House

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with MBA Broker Consultants CalBRE Broker #00983670

Now that you’re a homeowner, you are ready to take on the responsibilities and take good care of your new home.

As soon as you get the keys, conduct an orientation of your new home.  Make sure you know which keys unlock what, that the garage door opener actually opens the garage, and how to turn off the utilities in case of emergency.

Here’s a checklist to keep you on track:

  • Test all the locks and keys
  • Garage door opener
  • Gate codes / remotes
  • Common area entry keys (swimming pool gate etc.)
  • Mailbox key
  • Smoke detectors & test
  • Carbon monoxide detector & test
  • Water shut-off valve & tool
  • Gas/fuel shut-off valve & tool
  • Circuit breaker for power shut off/on
  • Sewer clean-out

Great list for home buyers to know what to do when they move in to their new home. You never know when the last time the previous home owners changed the batteries out in the smoke detectors so that's one of those small things I always recommend my buyers do when they move in.

Oh yes, don't forget the sprinkler system! I love these lists, they help home buyers learn their home before a crisis happens.

Regina, good advice for buyers. Most new homeowners are so focused on unpacking and getting settled that they don't consider getting acquainted with their new home.

Nice checklist.  The only thing I didn't see was to change the door locks immediately.

Excellent suggestions, Regina. I'm always reminding my home buyers that homes are "living/breathing" entities and need ongoing maintenance. It's not a set it and forget it exercise.

I've experienced a few people not paying attention to the mailbox and it backfires sometimes. You really got to watch that.
