How to Tip Around the World

In the U.S., it's customary to tip servers at least 15% at both bars and restaurants. That's not always the case in the rest of the world. In some countries, tip is included in the bill, splitting the bill is considered unsophisticated, and tipping can even cause confusion for the waiters.

Business Insider researched tipping customs in 24 countries around the world, so that no matter if you're at a bar in France or a restaurant in Egypt, you'll know just how much to tip! Below is an infographic that will not only show the local currency and how to tip, but also local customs for how to be a good diner.

Lisa - Interesting how many countries have a built-in service charge. Great tip on offering a cash tip in Japan. I would hate to be considered rude.

Having worked in tipped positions, I can tell you that nobody is going to be angry with you for overtipping!

It also doesn't hurt to descretely slip the busser a few bucks for their efforts and if you really want to impress a date, slip the host or hostess a $20.00 and mention to him or her that you're trying to impress your date.  I did this at a place in La Jolla, California and a couple of minutes after we were seated at a table near the entrance, our waiter asked if we would like to move to a table overlooking the water.  I always considered that to have been money well spent!
