Sea Turtle Season Is Back

By

A few days ago I noticed this flyer on the wall of the elevator. The Turtle season is back.  And today in Ormond Beach I saw the first nest staked and taped around. First for me this season.

Now we have to be careful with the light. Usually people use special light fixtures on the balcony. It is not the light itself, it is when it is on the sand. The turtles by instinct go to light, and in nature water reflects the moon and the stars and is the light.

As you see, fines are quite substantial, and it is a good inducement to do things right:)

Here is the flyer:Turtle Season in Daytona

In Grand Cayman, Jon Zolsky, Daytona Beach, FL  they breed and grow green sea turtles in controlled tanks, then release them to the sea.  Then 7 years or so later they come back fully grown and they harvest some of them.  You can drive around the island and they have "Green Turtle Burgers", GT Soup and other eats.

Jon - That is very interesting. I can see they take this very seriously, and they should.

Jon - Those are some serious fines.  I think it would be fascinating to watch.  I've seen it on tv and think that in person would be more so.

Jon, there is a group in Padre Island, Tx that rescues injured sea turtles, rehabs the turtles and then releases them.  They also work to educate the public about the turtles. I've visited a couple of times and the operation is incredible.

Jon,

Wow, I love that there is a spirit of serious care for the sea turtles.  They are magnificent creatures, no doubt about that.  A

Sharon Parisi - they do it here as well. We have the Marine Center in Ponce inlet, and they pick injured sea animals and birds. Here is the photo of the release in 2011, but this event happens every year

Bruce Hicks - very interesting. I Google and found an article in Wikipedia about the Green Turtle farm there. Quite controversial, though.

I was a bit surprised by 7 year, that you mentioned, it takes to come to lay eggs. Here we are told that it is about 25 years. Checked Wikipedia for green turtles, and seems nobody knows for sure. This is what they say "It is speculated that they take twenty to fifty years to reach sexual maturity."

Troy Erickson - it is hurting the city, of course. It is not easy to keep the beaches completely dark, and it is hurting resorts, as when there is no light, there is no fun :)

Christine Donovan - my grandson once went to the beach very early, when it was completely dark, and watched the turtle laying eggs. I have never seen it, though I have seen a turtle.

Here is the photo taken by my grandson. the turtle is returning to the ocean, all covered with sand after digging and then covering the nest. It was already not dark, so he could take the picture, and we simply made it lighter

Jon - What a great experience for your grandson and good that it was no longer too dark to get a picture.

Christine Donovan - oh, absolutely. I still envy him. But at least we once adopted 3 nests, and were present when the Turtle Patrol people were opening the ensts after the hatchlings left to see if any of them could not make it, and there were 14, that cold not get out of the deep nest, and this was the experience of my life

Jon, I haven't heard about any restrictions where my beachfront condos are in Destin. Maybe we don't get the sea turtles.

Mike Frazier - you sure do. You have turtles, and you have rules to go with it. You might not have fines like ours, but your ordinance protects the turtles the same way as ours. Here is the link to the information about Sea Turtles in Walton County, FL.
