Eco Buying – How Green is My Wallet?

We are getting hit with lots of information on the Environment and Shopping Green. This includes Buying Green Homes.

The California Association of Realtor's (CAR) put out this infographic showing how different Green Features for the Home impact sales. Take a look:

Buying a Green Home

The primary observation made by the CAR on this graphic is that people will only go green when it actually saves them money. Although I agree with them that people will tend to shop and buy only when it makes economic sense for them I have some other takes on this.

  1. Not everything that is presented as “Green” is really Green for the Environment. Some of it is really more about the greening of wallets. Some things presented as “Green” are actually not “Green” for the environment.

  2. Two classes of items seem to be attractive to home owners and buyers.

  3. One of those classes is things that are long established and aesthetically pleasing. (Windows and Ceiling Fans.)

  4. The other thing that people seem to be really interested in is water savings. Water saving devices are economical and I think in general water shortage issues are more realistic and believable to people than other issues.

  5. People will not buy Green items if they do not believe they will work right or as effective as traditional items.

These are fairly subjective thoughts and hunches based on my own feelings and talking to other people.

What do you think?

I agree with you on all points;  in CA, especially, I can see why water saving devices would be extremely important.

Hi Gene - We are seeing buyers willing to pay more, if it's new construction and the Green features are well-integrated and cost-effective. But there hasn't been a huge demand driving the market.

Susan Haughton The water problem is real.  Some of the other issues are bogus.  We are considering putting in catches for rain water.

Dick Greenberg No one has come to me telling me I have to find them a home with Energy Star Appliances.  Integrated is key.  Not sure how cost effective Energy Star is, but I have heard nothing against it.

Gene, I agree with all your comments. Many supposed Green items are really not good for the environment. Consumers will look to green when as you said know it will work and not cost a fortune maintaining all the time.

Good evening Gene. Green is certainly the way to go nowadays. Anything we can do to recycle is good.

Michael Thornton nothing wrong with green if it is really green.   Electric cars do more damage to the environment than gas cars.
