While shopping, I came across this mannequin and it stopped me in my tracks. Last night, I couldn't sleep because of the Oregon shootings and my mind kept going back to this mannequin in the store. Is this what makes kids today happy? Pizza? Shopping? Weekends? All of the above?
The mannequin's face says it all - a blank stare without emotion. An image of a teen with disheveled hair and no direction. Society and the culture I grew up in has changed. School should be one of the safest places for kids to go, but if they can't be safe in an environment that prevents violence and promotes education, then there is something terribly wrong with our society. I am in awe by bloggers on ActiveRain like Barbara Todaro, Dorie Dillard, and Sharon Tara who mentor and bond with their grandchildren. Those children have a good chance of becoming respectable adults, but they live in a world of the weird, wacky, weirdos and I find that very disturbing.
Something has to give. There is a lot more to this story than gun control and it's called mental illness that possibly hasn't been identified yet. But it's there - nationwide. Students are at risk when they go to school. concerts, and movie theaters. Since the beginning of my existence, there has been vaccines for children before going to school, annual physicals, eye check exams, hearing tests, etc. Is it time for a psychological test before going to school? I think the time has come for kids to get a head check-up on an annual basis. Until we know what the cause is for this bizarre behavior, how could any parent or guardian feel safe letting their children go to school?
