Swauk Prairie, Washington.

One of my favorite drives in Washington is heading east through downtown Cle Elum (about 1 1/2 hours east out of Seattle over Snoqualmie Pass on Interstate 90) to Teanaway then up the 970 to 97 and over Blewett Pass. Take a right onto State Route 2 then down through Dryden, Cashmere, Monitor, and Sunnyslope. The hillsides are beautiful and you’ll see a lot of orchards and vineyards along Highway 2 all the way into Wenatchee on the Columbia River...

Swauk Prairie, Washington

This evening, October 8th, I’m homeward bound over the same route and headed west back to the Puget Sound megalopolis and my home in Renton. The sun is still bright, but low in the October sky around 6 pm, as I'm driving through Swauk Prairie in this high plains area snuggled up in the Cascade Mountain Range. I’m loving the views and the long shadows.

I saw a lot of charred hillsides both over and back. The wildfires were really bad this year in Eastern Washington. There are still several active fires as of today (October 15, 2015) but thank goodness for cooler temps and some much needed rain many are now out or under control.

Hi Rene - Mary & I have driven through that area a couple of times - we have some good friends that lived in Wenatchee - it really is beautiful, but then so is much of Washington.

Hi Dick Greenberg ... then you know what I'm talking about :O) Love the Wenatchee area, and it's true, they get more sunshine than we do here on the west side of the Cascades...

Thanks Grant Schneider ... I couldn't have asked for a nicer autumn day. And, to think, the day before it was raining hard and windy! That's Washington...

Hi Rene, great shot of Swauk Prairie with mountain view. At least the sky was blue and not polluted by the wildfires.

Hi Jane Peters ... Washington has so many different distinct areas. Cle Elum is 1913 feet above sea level, then a mostly gentle slope upwards until you get to Blewett Pass which is at 4,124 feet. Most think that Snoqualmie Pass is the highest because of the dramatic climb up from sealevel and the huge surrounding peaks. But Blewett is actually a little over 1,000 feet higher. Beautiful country!

Hi Kwee Huset ... Indeed, the skies around here still had some smoke, but not along this drive. When I was on my road trip and coming through southeast Washington in August, it was very smokey. Infact pretty much from Laramie, Wyoming all the way home to Seattle was real hazy.

My son is so smitten with the area after a recent road trip from Seattle, he now wants to purchase property on Lake Wenatchee. I'm doing some research for him now. :)

Rene, this puts me in mind of the wide open spaces I saw when I drove from Philly out here back in '79. It doesn't look like WA to me at all!
