I'm Thankful for My Friend Who Taught Me About Balance
About 30 years ago, as a new "Born Again" Christian I found myself church shopping. I had become friends with a pastor through a hobby or some mutual interest and I decided to find out more about his church, Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
Mervin Bauer took great care to explain to me how important the balance of The Law and The Gospel is in their denomination. Like many new Christians I understood forgiveness and grace but hey... didn't that do away with the law?
It actually took many, many years for me to "get it". There is a current song on the Christian music charts that says unless we tell the world about the law how are they going to know they need the Gospel. Recently I heard a pastor brow beat his audience about what filthy sinners we are... I don't think that Pastor "got it" or really understood.
Mervin Bauer would say the law shows us how perfect God is and how short we measure up BUT that is why the BALANCE of the Gospel is so important.
