Food For Thought: How Does MSG Effect Your Health?

What is MSG? or monosodium glutamate, is a common and widespread additive in food used mainly for flavor enhancement, but also for preservation. MSG has been used for well over a century as a food additive, but in the last couple of decades claims of illness have been linked to MSG consumption. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists MSG as "generally recognized as safe," although some health experts believe that it can negatively affect your health.

From my perspective, if you are saying it’s “generally safe,” that sounds like a fluff word that is sugar coating the possible truth of the matter. The photo above was taken at a local food store near my house. I have to say, I was pretty surprised to see it.

Consumers are becoming more aware about the negative effects of artificial and preservative chemicals added to our foods. More sound evidence is being provided through reliable resources such as with the Mayo Clinic. One of the most common side effects people have reported is experiencing head aches.

When I was younger, my family and I used to din in at this particular Chinese restaurant on Long Island. I remember mom always request no MSG to be put in our food. She did it so often it got me curious and I asked her, why do you ask for no MSG? She said, by the end of the meal, if not in the car, then defiantly by the time we arrive home we are all fighting with each other.  It seemed emotions were triggered much easier. According to many symptoms reported from MSG consumption could also have a neurological effect, which in turn can impact the mind and emotions.

So as with anything I share, I invite you to conduct your own research, be your own detective.

I try to avoid it myself but I don't think I have any reaction that I can tell. Best to avoid additives and preservatives.

Laura,  It's a killer ... nothing safe about it.  The glutamate is the real killer.  I've done a ton of research and understand that it does to the body.  Nothing good.
