Oakland Raiders to San Antonio?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Best Practices Realty

The recent NFL owners decision by (30 votes to 2), to allow the Rams to return to Los Angeles has positive implications for San Antonio. The Oakland Raiders can only join the Rams in LA if the San Diego Chargers decline their option to move there and share a new stadium with the Rams. Reports are now surfacing that Oakland owner Mark Davis is furious that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones drove the Rams / Chargers deal, leaving the Raiders most likely shut out of the lucrative LA market. It has also been reported that Mark Davis has purchased or at least optioned land between San Antonio and Austin for a possible new stadium for his Raiders. As the Raiders stadium lease in Oakland has expired, they would be free to move to San Antonio as soon as the 2016 season, and play in downtown San Antonio at the Alamodome until a new stadium was completed. Who agrees that America's 7th largest City (San Antonio) deserves an NLF team? Note: only New York City , Los Angeles and Chicago have higher populations than the cities of San Antonio and Austin combined!

Leah,
I’m a fan of San Antonio but I can’t imagine Jerry Jones and Bob McNair are going to let a 3rd team in Texas.

Leah - I could certainly see how San Antonio could support an NFL team. We will just have to wait and see how things unfold now that the Rams are moving back to Los Angeles.

Thanks for your comment David, but of course it doesn't matter what Jerry and Bob think as long as at least 21 other owners plus Mark Davis vote for it!

Hi Leah, That would be great for San Antonio to get a Team, but only time will tell. We have always be considered a "Small Market" compared to those other larger cities like Dallas and Houston.

Thanks for your comment Jerry. Of course the 'San Antonio is a small market' line is a myth created and perpetuated by the likes of Jerry Jones and Bob McNair. The fact is that the population of the City of San Antonio is larger than the population of the City of Dallas. I know that the Dallas Metroplex is bigger, but San Antonio would also pull from Austin, and if you want to talk small markets that have NFL teams right now how about the following populations:

City of Buffalo, NY - 258K with a shrinking population

Kansas City, KS - 149K

Green Bay, WI - 105K
