Mt. St. Helens - An Iconic Landmark in Clark County

Mt. St. Helens - The Rounded Dome on the Horizon

Mt. St. Helens is a familiar and iconic landmark to those us of who live in Clark County, Washington. Our family spent many summer hours fishing and camping at Spirit Lake. We even had a chance to meet the local folk-hero, Harry Truman,  who refused to leave his home despite repeated warnings. He died, along with 56 others, when the volcano erupted on May 18, 1980.

A once beautiful recreation area was transformed, in mere moments, to a vast, gray landscape of broken trees, searing lava flows, and ash. Now, 36 years later the area is once again rich in beauty. Animals and plant life have returned in abundance. The rebirth reminding us of the power of Mother Nature and the cycles of life.

The Mountain Springs to Life

The mountains distinct, rounded dome is often snow covered this time of year. It won’t be long though, before the Spring wildflowers burst forth bringing us another busy recreation season. Hikers, horseback riders, boaters, fishermen and campers will return in droves. Tourists will pack the Johnston Observation center to watch films about the volcano’s famous eruption.

There are various ways to get to the mountain, but many of us who live in Clark County access it via Interstate Five NB and take either the Woodland, or the La Center exit. On a clear day, we can see the mountain from a number of viewpoints throughout Clark County. If you’re looking for an adventure offering “Elbow Room for the Soul,”™ you’ll find it here.

Good afternoon Debb,

My brother lives in Richmond and sent pictures and bottles of ash to my kids at the time of the explosion. A great view when driving from Seattle to him and some great wineries in the area as well.

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Debb- loved the photo of Mt St Helens as well as the video.  We forget that Mother Nature knows what she's doing, even though it may take a few years to show it.

That was just crazy when this occured 36 years ago.  It is amazing how Mother Nature clears an area and allows it to be reborn again.  Looks beautiful now.

Gotta check out the video, but anyone who really knows this mountain, knows what a monumental journey she's had and those who have lived (and died) being around her! The fact that you all got to meet the infamous (other) Harry Truman is pretty remarkable. We even have the silly little movie made about Mt St Helens (Larry has a copy). I'm going to bookmark this for a future and well-deserved Tuesday Travelogue!

Oh! forgot to add what a glorious opportunity this has brought to scientists and biologists all over the world in the amazing re-growth and rejuvenation of her flora and fauna.

You are fortunate to have such beauty in your backyard. We don't see places like that on Long Island. We have beautiful Farms, beaches and other sites. It's it wonderful the world is so different, and beauty everywhere?

Hi Debb - Nice video. It's wonderful the way nature heals itself - we've seen amazing comebacks after devastating fires here and in Yelowstone, and it's great to Mt. St. Helens looking good again.

Debb, I remember being in Seattle and Vancover shortly after the eruption. We were traveling to vancover and took a route out by the San Juan Islands and were amazed at how it made the sky look like a painting. The atmosphere was alive and it also made me glad I was close to it or there at the time of the eruption.
