Being Polite and Considerate: It is as Simple, As Saying Hello!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

The majority of us are tired of the politically correct noose that has reduced our language to torturing synonyms, inventing hyphenated labels, and ridiculous expressions like “vertically challenged” for someone who is very short.  We think the antidote to all that is to focus on being polite and considerate to everyone we meet.

This post is inspired by an American ex-pat living and working in Paris.   Her recent post in “The Expat Blog” was titled “The Power of Bonjour!”   Proper greetings are the backbone of French culture, so much so that they have an expression, “Simple comme bonjour”, which translates into simple as hello, or good morning, good afternoon, good evening.  Omitting, bonjour is considered by the French as insulting as spitting in someone’s face.

The French consider Americans rude and we think they are too. The majority of us will walk into a store, notice something we like and approach the salesperson with a request:  Do you have this item in black? We walk into a restaurant and tell the host, we have a reservation at 7PM for 6 people!  Rarely do you hear a sincere greeting, like hello!  We expect the salesperson or the host to greet us without the need to respond, we want them to just move on to serve us.

In France and other European countries the proper greeting is a way to pay respect and acknowledge our equality as human beings, not as master and servant. The simple bonjour opens the door to the possibility of a mutually beneficial relationship.

We have recently focused on taking the time to say “hello” and mean it.   We have found that this is one of the ways to bring the best version of ourselves to our game. It is as simple as “hello!”

It's good to know local customs. For example, sometimes New York City dwellers are considered unfriendly because they generally don't smile at strangers. In reality, in a very crowded environment it's a way to give each other "space" and privacy, the same way New Yorkers don't "accost" celebrities in the streets, just let them walk by in peace.

Well, 'Hello!' and 'Bonjour!' Ron and Alexandra Seigel.  Loved your Blog - it is such a simple, polite word, that is so easy to say.  It is a Greeting!  I know that I use it, and not as often as I should.  I've been known to be brief and get to the point, and you just don't realize how rude it can be to others, even though that was never my intention.  Thanks for the excellent reminder!!

Love this. As someone who grew up in a family retail business, I know the importance of greetings. You set the tone for that person's shopping experience and that could be the difference of that person coming back to shop with you and also referring folks to your business. Apply this to everyday life and I'll bet wonderful things will happen.

Greetings are hugely important.  Even saying hi to someone on the street that you are passing can bring a smile to their face.

I always say Hello and ask how people are doing, regardless of what their position is. Dale Carnegie in his book "How To Win Friends and Influence People" even says to never neglect any employee at any level. Some day they may end up being the owner and they will never forget your kindness, but they will also never forget your thoughtlessness!

Thanks for commenting.  I don't think that we all are necessarily rude, it is just they may have bought in to being time starved that the niceties have gone by the wayside.  I watched yesterday at the Farmers Market, how many of us just hand the money for something we have purchased, and just move on.  Or we ask a question without saying hello and expect an answer immediately.

We made a point of greeting every vendor we bought from, the smiles from them made what is a delightful experience for us every Saturday we are in town, even better.  A

Kathy Streib we do that at the beach also, and most people here smile back and respond. How can you not be happy at the beach?

Olga Simoncelli When we lived in Los Angeles, we never accosted celebs, we gave them a wide berth to enjoy their lives.  We did say hello to the one we knew at the market or the gas station.  It is the tourists that do that!  A

Ron & Alexandra,

I greet others most of the time.  Even in my emails I greet the person I am writing to with "good morning" "Hi", or anything similar to that.  I have had responses from my clients that it is so nice to see this type of greeting.  Puts them in a good mood for starters.  Plus, it is so simple to do.

OK, the bonjour thing is something they don't emphasize in my Pimsleur French lessons.  So this post will save me a lot of embarrassment on future trips to France.  Merci!

My last year of college I worked for a telemarketing firm, I was told to smile when speaking as people can hear it it your voice. Sounds silly but it works, its so much easier to be pleasant to people, it actually feels good. Even when I'm having a bad day! A simple cheerful greeting makes both giver and receiver feel good!

Thanks for your comment, and I have noticed that many say Hi and then launch into whatever they want from another.

Ever since we wrote this post, we have been aware of how we all just demand what we want.  We really forget that the person in front of us deserves a greeting  as well as a moment and a chance to respond back.

Wishing you a great weekend.  A
