A Family's Road Side Memorial in Watertown CT

By
Real Estate Agent with Mapleridge Realty, CT 203-206-0754 REB.0759001

While showing houses for sale in Watertown CT today, I had passed what appeared to be eagles on a hunt.  I let it go until the end of my visits and then came back to them.  It was a group of 3 eagles that appeared to be diving to catch a potential meal.

The largest of the 3 eagles had a sign encouraging photos as well as the notation: Eagles Watching Over you."

Draped around the eagles head was a chain which had 6 tags attached to it. The first tag just read, Forever Mourned, Forever Honored.

On the other 5 tags were the names of family members, all last named White that had served and fallen in battle.

The history of this family's heroes started at a Capt White that had served in the Continental Army, 3 members that served in WWll, and the last had fallen in the Korean conflict.

This is a family that can trace it's honored service people to over 240 years.  There can be few others that can say the same.

That's a wonderful tribute to the service and sacrifice of the White family. Is this memorial on city or county property? Just curious. Thanks for sharing, Ed.

Pat Starnes   This is on a corner of a meadow attached to a farm, all private land, most probably owned by the White Family.

Lisa Von Domek   I fund it interesting that they could trace their heirs back to the Revolutionary war.

Myrl Jeffcoat   It catches the sight line as you crest the hill as they appear to be coming in for a landing.

Joe Petrowsky   Hopefully they will not have to add any more names to that memorial.

Ed that really touches me. How beautifully done and it would be so great to see this done in other areas of the country.

I have a client that is interested in buying one of my cabins and she has family buried in our little Fishhawk Cemetery. I happened to have taken two photos of two of her family, a father and son who both died serving their country. I had it included in a Memorial Day post that I wrote, so I sent it to her after she had mentioned their last name...so ironic, huh? She doesn't live in the area now, but she said that she WILL be buried in the Fishhawk Cemetery when the time comes.

Ed, there was something on the news about a bunch of bald eagles found dead in a field over the weekend.  At first I thought this was going to be a memorial for them.
