Stripless In Las Vegas: Day 5

Yellow desert flower

The Stripless adventure for today had us going out into the desert, looking for wildflowers.  Without any specific plan for the day, we headed west from Las Vegas toward Death Valley, and ended up making a loop past Tecopa Hot Springs, through Pahrump and back to Vegas.

We made numerous stops, photographing various plants and flowers and scenery.

We didn't go into Death Valley National Park this trip, but that could definitely be another interesting Stripless adventure.  I wouldn't recommend Death Valley during the summer, though.  We were there in mid March and it was already getting hot.

Another thing to keep in mind about Death Valley is the GPS service out there is unreliable, so start with a full tank of gas and a good map of the area. If you do find a gas station, you're going to pay an arm and a leg more than the stations in town.   The price of gas in Vegas that day was about $2.15.  Out here, it was $3.79.

In addition to our success finding wild flowers, we discovered the Mountain Falls Golf Club while passing through Pahrump.  Unfortunately, we didn't have time to play a round of golf but, if we ever go back to the area, we will make the time.  It is lush and green and looks like a fun and challenging course.  We had a nice chat with the clubhouse manager and I ended up buying an awesome pair of golf capris.

To drown our sorrow for not having the time to play the golf course (before nightfall), we headed to the Pahrump Valley Winery and Symphony's Restaurant.  We enjoy wine tasting during our travels and this adventure did not disappoint.  We spent about 45 minutes wine tasting, so when we went into dinner at the Restaurant we were confident in ordering wine with our meal.    We're hardly wine experts or snobs, but we know what we like.  I ended up with the Syrah and my friend had the Chardonnay.

Pahrump seems to be becoming a popular retirement destination or, perhaps, a second home destination for many retirees.  There was a lot of new construction going on.

After dinner at the winery, we headed back to our condo in Las Vegas.

Sometimes you just need to head out without much of a plan and just see what you discover along the way.   You might be delighted, as we were.

Good afternoon Carol,

I used to own property in Pahrump and the golf course there was pretty good.

Ad any hikes in Death Valley better have lots of water.

Make yourself an astonishing day.

Donald and I actually vacationed last fall without "much of a plan" and we loved it.  We had a couple of family day events on the schedule and then another 14 days of wandering across the country.
