3rd Annual National Train Day for Autism

The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw will host its 3rd Annual National Train Day for Autism, the only Metro Atlanta train event that creates a sensory-friendly experience for individuals on the Autism spectrum and their families, on Saturday May 7, 2016 from 9:30 AM — 5:00 PM.

“Our goal is to create opportunities for children on the Autism spectrum to be involved in their community in a safe, supportive space,” said Dr. Richard Banz, the Museum’s Executive Director. “We want everyone to be able to enjoy a nostalgic pastime and create great memories with their family!”

The Museum will have several types of model train layouts for children of different ages and needs to tinker and play with, including wooden Thomas trains and remote controlled trains. There will also be in-depth circuitry workshops for those who want to learn to how the wiring on an electric train layout works. Other features include open-ended discovery stations with Legos, blocks, gears, ramps, and more!

“Children on the Autism spectrum benefit greatly from hands-on experience, especially in sensory-friendly environments where they can focus on the activity,” said Ruth Lonvick, Early Childhood Educator at the Southern Museum. “We are eliminating extra noise in the Museum for the day by switching off sound effects, changing lighting for the day, and providing an open ‘quiet room’ for children who might be overwhelmed to recharge.”

In addition to creating a welcoming environment, the Museum is partnering with Appleseeds Learning Center in Kennesaw to provide staff training on facilitating activities for children on the Autism spectrum. Appleseeds staff will also be volunteering at the event.

Pre-sale tickets are available. Pre-sale tickets are recommended but are not required 3rd Annual National Train Day for Autism.
