Real Estate Agent with Pat Hiban Interviews Real Estate Rockstars and Founder of Rebus University

In the world of real estate, when things don’t go well, we cannot blame life. People under a stressful situation usually complain that “life isn’t fair”. Others who are in an office sometimes complain about “equal treatment”. People tend to interchange the two. During my interview with a man who is the father of 3 wonderful children, fair treatment and equal treatment has been made clearer. He also made it a point to highlight his approach on every situation, especially in real estate. When he talked about his strategy, he suddenly reminded me of Buzz Lightyear. You’ll know why.

Jason Stockwell learned a lot from his years in real estate. The things he learned a lot from were his mistakes. Jason highlighted fair and equal treatment. What is the difference? Fair treatment is giving what is due to the person. Let’s say for example, one of my agents rendered overtime for 10 hours. Fair treatment would dictate that I pay him his salary plus 10 hours overtime. But, if I were to treat everyone equally or provide equal treatment, I will pay everyone the same amount regardless of overtime or undertime. Another example is when someone makes a mistake. If I were to treat people fairly, I would pull out the person who made a mistake and reprimand him privately. Why would I reprimand everyone if only one person made the mistake? However, if were to treat everyone equally, what I say and do to one person will be said and done to everyone else. So we had those two sorted out. From a leadership standpoint, both can be helpful. One can promote accountability and responsibility for each other’s actions, the others promote individuality AND teamwork. Which one does what, is for you to find out.

“You should go into everything like it’s gonna be a competitive situation.” In the world of real estate, everything is a competition, from marketing to advertisements, open-houses to referrals and from leads to listings. You have to keep in mind that you are not the only one out there. This is what Jason Stockwell always reminds himself of. So, he built himself a team with a mission to truly provide the best customer experience to every client they work with. This team of his focuses on becoming their clients’ advocates who will represent them from the beginning to the end AND BEYOND. See why I get reminded of Buzz Lightyear? Toy Story? Really? Oh well. With this in mind, you are sure to win more listings and become more referable. Imagine customers and clients talking about you during their dinners after they have just purchased a house you sold. This tends to happen when you give it your best shot and MORE.

So we talked some more during the interview and stumbled upon a certain topic. What is one thing that you hated most about real estate? Identify that and think it over and over again. Why do you hate it so much? After you have answered that, ask yourself this question, “What better thing to do to an enemy than to make him an ally?” Wouldn’t it be so much better to turn this weakness into strength? Everything can be learned. With Jason Stockwell, he used to have different method in identifying, maintaining and keeping talent but with everything he’s learned, he made a few tweaks.

Everything is subject to change all you have to do is be flexible. When you start your day, go at it with everything you’ve got and always remember that competition is everywhere. Keep in mind that you are your own competition when it comes to self improvement. Be a better version of yourself compared to yesterday. Lastly, during each and every customer interaction, make sure that you give it your all and go the extra mile because when the time comes, you will definitely reap the rewards. Who says life isn’t fair? Whatever effort you put in will give you a result proportional to the effort you exerted. If you invest more time and work smart, you will also be given more time to relax later on coz you’ve paid your dues. In the world of real estate ladies and gentlemen, let your imagination rule because here there are no limits.
