Plant Sale and Plant Education Classes

at Foster Botanical Garden

You love the Orchids you receive as a gift but do they love you? Is your lanai the place were plants go to die? Learn to be a caregiver and not a killer of orchids and other tropical flora.

The Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens was organized in 1961 as the Friends of Foster Garden. Its purpose is to support the programs of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens and to spread knowledge and the enjoyment of plants.

To help fund their programs the Friends of Foster Garden have held more than 50 plant sales. The first plant sale was held in the spring of 1961. In 1993 the group formally became the Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens, as volunteer groups developed at three different gardens, first at Foster Garden, then at Wahiawa and Ho’omaluhia. Today Foster Botanical Garden continues to nurture plant education with it’s highly anticipated Spring Plant Sale.

Hi Kimo - that is something worth learning.  Orchids are very beautiful but need special care.  We could use one of these classes near us.

Aloha Grant, Orchids will last a long time if you know the varietal care demands. Unfortunately many orchids parish from neglect or over watering. Thanks for visiting.

I'm ashamed to say that I have murdered a couple of orchid plants.  Not sure why they didn't thrive.  Could be that I brought them home in the dead of winter and didn't have a tropical location for them to thrive.

Aloha Belinda, Orchids are not easy to cultivate but it's worth taking a little time to understand the basic care needs. Watering, soil medium, light, humidity all are important factors that vary from variety to variety.

Aloha Sharon, orchids would have a difficult time in the dry winter months Downeast, you would probably need a hothouse to properly care for them or an enclosed glass humidor.
